Tithis from the Moon–Sun elongation (Meeus algorithms) and sunrise for the Sun’s upper limb with refraction. The vrat day is the first day whose midday (the third fifth of daytime) has the tithi, as Drik Panchang lists it; the sunrise day is added when it differs. Begin and end times agree with Drik Panchang within about two minutes. Month names are amanta for Purnima and purnimanta for Amavasya, as in north Indian lists. The sample shown before the page loads is New Delhi, 2026.

These dates follow the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice; for a vrat follow your family priest, temple or sampradaya, whose rules may differ. Fasting can be unsafe with some health conditions or in pregnancy — ask a doctor. Everything is computed in your browser.

Amavasya and Purnima dates for the whole year

This free page lists every Amavasya (new moon) and Purnima (full moon) of a year from 1900 to 2099 with the moment each tithi begins and ends, the day the fast or puja is kept and the lunar month it belongs to. It answers “purnima kab ki hai” and “amavasya kab hai” for your own city: pick the place, and the dates and times follow its sunrise and time zone, in India, the USA or anywhere else.

Sikh households know the same days as Masya and Puranmashi; the list marks the day the tithi is current at sunrise, which is how Punjabi jantris print them. Somvati Amavasya (a new moon on a Monday) and Shani Amavasya (on a Saturday) are labelled. A month calendar shows the tithi at every sunrise, and the whole list can be downloaded as CSV or added to Google, Apple or Outlook calendars.

How to use the Amavasya & Purnima Dates

  1. Enter the Year and choose your City, or type coordinates and a time zone, or press Use my location.
  2. Untick Purnima or Amavasya under Show if you only need one of them.
  3. Read the list: the date of the vrat day, the tithi’s begin and end times and, where it differs, the day the tithi is current at sunrise.
  4. Use the month calendar to see the tithi of any day; tap a day for details.
  5. Press Download CSV or Add to calendar (.ics) to keep the dates.

How the dates are fixed

A tithi is a 12° step in the Moon’s distance from the Sun. Purnima is the fifteenth tithi, when the Moon is between 168° and 180° from the Sun, and Amavasya the thirtieth, from 348° to 360°; each lasts about a day but can start at any hour. Because a Hindu day runs from sunrise, a tithi can touch one civil day, two, or — rarely — none at sunrise.

For the Purnima vrat and Darsha Amavasya, almanacs such as Drik Panchang take the first day on which the tithi is current at madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daytime. That is why the Purnima fast sometimes falls on the day before the “Purnima day” printed elsewhere: in 2026 the Purnima vrat of Chaitra is on 1 April while Purnima holds at sunrise on 2 April. Gurdwaras and many families in Punjab mark Puranmashi and Masya on the sunrise day, so both are shown. For 2025, 2026 and 2027 every vrat day and sunrise day matches Drik Panchang’s published lists for New Delhi (checked 25 October 2026).

Names, regions and limits

Purnima names follow the lunar month that ends with it (Kartika Purnima, Guru Purnima in Ashadha). Amavasya names here follow the purnimanta reckoning used in north India, where the dark half belongs to the next month; amanta calendars of the south and west name the same new moon after the month it closes, which the details line also gives. Mahalaya, Mauni and Shani Amavasya are the same days by other names.

Dates can move by a day between cities, because sunrise and the time zone change which day holds the tithi. Temples and family almanacs may follow other rules for a particular puja, so follow your priest for rituals. This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice. For Ekadashi and parana see Ekadashi dates; for Sikh gurpurabs, sangrand, masya and puranmashi see the Nanakshahi calendar.

Amavasya & Purnima Dates FAQ

When is the next Amavasya or Purnima?

With the current year selected, the line at the top names the next one for your city and counts the days.

Purnima kab ki hai — why are there two dates?

When Purnima begins in the afternoon, the fast is kept that day (midday rule) while Purnima is still current at the next sunrise. Both days are listed.

How many Amavasyas are there in 2026?

Twelve in New Delhi. 2026 also has thirteen Purnima vrat days because the year begins with the Pausha Purnima of 3 January and ends with the Margashirsha Purnima of 23 December.

What are Masya and Puranmashi?

The Punjabi names of Amavasya and Purnima. Gurdwara and jantri dates use the day the tithi is current at sunrise, shown in the list where it differs.

Are the dates the same in the USA?

Not always — choose your US city, since the time zone and sunrise can move a tithi to another civil date.

Is this astrology advice?
