Rising sign calculator for your Sun, Moon and rising sign
This free rising sign calculator gives your astrological “big three” — the Sun sign, the Moon sign and the rising sign (ascendant) — from your date, time and place of birth. The positions are worked out from real astronomy for that minute and that spot on Earth, then placed in the zodiac, so a birth on a cusp or late at night gets the right answer instead of a guess from a date table.
Under the result is a full table of rising signs for the day: every sign that rose over the eastern horizon at the birthplace, with the time it started and ended. If you do not know your birth time, tick Birth time unknown and use that table — if you know you were born “in the early morning” or “around dinner time”, you can read off the two or three signs that fit. The page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice.
How to use the Sun, Moon and Rising Sign Calculator
- Enter the Date of birth and Time of birth (24-hour clock), or tick Birth time unknown.
- Pick the Birth city, or type the Latitude and Longitude and choose the Time zone. For very old records, set Clock used to local mean time.
- Leave the Zodiac on Tropical for Western astrology, or switch to Sidereal (Lahiri) for the Vedic version.
- Read your Sun, Moon and rising sign in the panel, then the traditional keywords for each.
- Scroll to Rising signs through the day to see when each sign was rising; the row with your birth time is highlighted. Press Copy as text to share.
Sun, Moon and Rising Sign Calculator features
Real positions, not date tables
The Sun and Moon come from Meeus’ algorithms with ΔT and nutation, the ascendant from local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic — the same engine as the full birth chart calculator, checked against published charts.
Works without a birth time
The day is scanned in two-minute steps and every rising-sign change is timed to the minute, so you get a clear list of the possible rising signs and the hours they cover.
Moon changes flagged
The Moon moves about 13° a day. If it changed sign on your birth date, the tool says when, and shows both signs when the time is unknown.
Cusp and edge warnings
A note appears when the Sun or Moon sits within 0.2° of a sign edge, or when the rising sign changes within ten minutes of the time you entered.
Historical clocks
The time-zone database knows old daylight-saving and war-time rules; local mean time and fixed offsets cover records from before standard zones.
What the Sun, Moon and rising sign mean in astrology
The Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on your birthday — the one newspaper horoscopes use — and tradition links it to the core self. The Moon sign is where the Moon was; astrologers associate it with feelings and instincts. The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth; it is said to colour first impressions and outward style. Because the whole zodiac turns past the horizon once a day, the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, which is why it needs the birth time and the place.
Some signs rise quickly and some slowly. At northern mid-latitudes Pisces and Aries can rise in under an hour while Virgo and Libra take close to three, and the pattern reverses south of the equator. The table under the result shows this directly for your birthplace and date.
| Placement | What it is | Needs | Traditional theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | the Sun’s zodiac sign | date (time only on a cusp) | core self, vitality |
| Moon sign | the Moon’s zodiac sign | date, often the time | emotions, instincts |
| Rising sign | sign on the eastern horizon | exact time and place | first impression, outward style |
Finding your rising sign without a birth time
Birth certificates in many countries do not record the time, so this is the most common question. Tick Birth time unknown: the Sun and Moon are computed for noon, the rising sign is marked as unknown, and the table lists every rising sign of the day with its hours. If the Moon changed sign that day the panel shows both. For a whole chart — planets, houses and aspects — use the birth chart calculator; for the Sun sign alone the zodiac sign calculator is quicker.
Tropical or sidereal: why your sign may differ on Indian sites
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Indian (Vedic) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the stars, which is now about 24° behind, so many people are one sign earlier there. Switch the Zodiac control to see both. In sidereal mode the rising sign is the Vedic lagna — the lagna calculator adds its lord and nakshatra — and the Moon sign is your rashi, which the rashi calculator covers in detail.
Sun, Moon and Rising Sign Calculator FAQ
Is this rising sign calculator free?
Yes — free, no sign-up, and the whole calculation runs in your browser, so your birth details are never uploaded.
Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?
Not exactly, because it changes every two hours or so. Tick Birth time unknown to see every rising sign of that day with its time range, and narrow it down from what you know about when you were born.
How accurate is the rising sign?
The astronomy is within a few arc-minutes, so the answer is as good as the birth time. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes; when your time is within ten minutes of a sign change, the tool warns you.
Why is my rising sign different on another site?
Usually the time zone or daylight-saving time, a city with different coordinates, or a sidereal zodiac. Check the line under the inputs, which shows the offset that was applied.
What is the big three in astrology?
Your Sun, Moon and rising sign — the three placements most people learn first. This calculator gives all three at once with the traditional keywords for each.
Does my rising sign predict anything?
No. It describes which part of the zodiac was on the horizon when you were born. Astrology is a tradition, not a science; read the result for fun and reflection, not as advice.
