Rashi letters (naam akshar) for each Moon sign
Each rashi spans nine nakshatra padas, and each pada has a traditional starting sound. Families that follow the custom choose a baby’s name from the syllable of the Moon’s pada at birth, or from the rashi’s letters below. The Devanagari column follows onlinejyotish.com (October 2026); धा and ढा both romanise as “Dha”. Shravana lists differ (जू जे जो ख, खी खू खे खो).

Rashi calculator for a newborn baby
For a newborn, enter the date, time and place of birth from the hospital record. The panel shows the rashi, the nakshatra and pada, and the name syllable for that pada. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so it changes nakshatra roughly once a day and rashi every two and a half days; if that happened on the birth date, a note gives the exact time. The default example is such a day: on 14 August 2025 the Moon left Meena for Mesha at 09:06 in New Delhi, so a baby born at 08:00 is Meena rashi and one born at 10:00 is Mesha. Vedic rashi or Western Moon sign?
Indian astrology measures the Moon in the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac of Western astrology, so your rashi is often one sign earlier than your Western Moon sign. How do I find my rashi by date of birth?
Enter the date, time and place of birth. Without the time the rashi is still certain on most days, because the Moon stays in one rashi for about two and a half days; the tool tells you when it changed on your date.
Can I find my rashi by name?
Yes — choose Name (English or Devanagari letters). This gives the traditional name rashi from the first syllable, which only matches the birth rashi if the name was chosen by that rule.
Is rashi the same as zodiac sign?
Not quite. Rashi usually means the Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac; the zodiac sign in Western magazines is the Sun sign in the tropical zodiac.
Which ayanamsa is used?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard of Indian almanacs, with nutation applied.
What are the letters for Meena rashi?
