Summarize, rewrite and write with AI that stays on your device

Most free AI websites work the same way: you paste your text, it travels to a company’s servers, and a large model answers. These AI tools take a different route wherever they can. The text summarizer turns a long passage into key points or a short paragraph, the paraphrasing tool says the same thing in new words, the tone changer makes a message more formal or more relaxed, and the text simplifier rewrites dense writing in plain language. Specialised summarizers handle articles, meeting notes and email threads, and the YouTube transcript extractor pulls a video’s captions into text you can read, search or summarize.

The work happens in your browser. On a desktop Chrome that has its built-in AI switched on, the tools use Chrome’s own on-device model (Gemini Nano). Elsewhere you can choose to download a small open model, IBM Granite 4.0 Nano (Apache-2.0 licence), which then runs inside the page: roughly 340 to 550 MB once, cached for next time, and nothing is downloaded until you agree. Either way your text is processed on your computer, not sent to an AI service. If neither engine is available, the summarizers can still pick your most important sentences without rewriting them.

Students condensing reading lists, managers turning a meeting transcript into action points, non-native speakers smoothing an email, and writers who want a second version of a paragraph use these tools every day. They are helpers, not authors: small on-device models are fast and private but less capable than the largest cloud models, so read every result before you rely on it.

Prompts, tokens and language helpers

Which rewriting tool fits your text?

  • Same meaning, new words. The paraphrasing tool rewrites a whole passage; the sentence rewriter gives several alternatives for one sentence so you can pick the best.
  • Different length. The text shortener trims to a word or character target, such as a 160-character description, while the text expander develops notes into full sentences.
  • Different reader. The tone changer shifts between formal, friendly and confident registers; the text simplifier aims at a lower reading level and shows the before-and-after score.
  • Less robotic. The AI text humanizer varies sentence length and removes stock phrases so a draft reads naturally. It is an editing aid, not a way to disguise work you are required to write yourself.

Getting better results from small models

  • Give one clear job at a time. “Summarize in three bullet points” works better than a request that also asks for a title, a tone change and a translation.
  • Long documents are split into parts, summarized part by part and combined. Headings and paragraph breaks in your text help the split land in sensible places.
  • Check names, numbers and dates against your original. Every language model can misread or invent details, and a summary is only as reliable as the text you gave it.
  • Chrome’s built-in AI needs a desktop computer (Windows, macOS, Linux or a Chromebook Plus) with enough free disk space and memory; it is not available on Android or iPhone. The downloadable model works in most modern desktop browsers and is fastest with WebGPU.
  • Keep the page open while a model downloads. The progress bar shows how far it has got, and Stop cancels the download.

AI Tools: frequently asked questions

Is my text sent to an AI company?

No. With Chrome’s built-in AI or the downloadable open model, your text is processed on your own device and never leaves the browser. The only optional server step is in the summarizers, which can score sentences on a server if you choose that engine and press the button; it is off by default and labelled.

Why does the tool ask me to download a model?

Your browser has no built-in AI the tool can use, so it offers a small open-source model that runs inside the page. It is downloaded once (roughly 340 to 550 MB), stored by your browser for next time, and only after you agree.

Are these AI tools really free?

Yes. Because the model runs on your own computer there is no per-use cost to pass on, so there are no credits, sign-ups or daily limits.

Why is the result slower than ChatGPT?

The model is running on your own processor or graphics card rather than in a data centre. A summary usually takes a few seconds to a minute, depending on your hardware and the length of the text.

Can I use the output in my work?

Yes, the text you produce is yours to use. Check it for accuracy first, and follow your school’s or employer’s rules about AI-assisted writing.

Does it work on my phone?

Chrome’s built-in AI is desktop-only, and the downloadable model needs more memory than most phones can spare, so these tools work best on a laptop or desktop. On a phone, the summarizers can still pick out key sentences.
