An AI writing prompt generator for writers, classes and AI tools
This AI writing prompt generator does two jobs. For people, it deals out creative writing prompts — a character, a setting, what they want, a problem, a twist, a constraint and, if you like, a first line — for short stories, flash fiction, poems, journal entries, letters, dialogue scenes and opinion essays, pitched at kids, teens or adults and at three levels of difficulty.
For AI tools, it writes a detailed prompt that tells ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any assistant exactly what to write: the type of piece, topic, audience, reading level, structure, point of view, tense, word count, tone, a sample of your own voice and a list of banned clichés.
Every creative prompt comes from a seed. Tick Prompt of the day and the date is the seed, so a whole class — or a writing group — gets the same prompt today. Type your own seed to reproduce a set later, and download 10, 20 or 30 prompts as a printable classroom PDF.
How to get a writing prompt
- Choose Writing prompts for people or A prompt for an AI to write — or start from an example.
- For people: pick the audience, type of writing, genre and difficulty, and how many prompts you want.
- Keep Prompt of the day ticked for today’s shared prompt, or press New prompts for a fresh seed.
- For a class, choose a pack size and press Download classroom pack (PDF).
- For an AI: fill in the type, topic, audience, reading level, word count and structure, add a voice sample and banned words, then copy the prompt.

What the difficulty levels add
| Level | Story prompts contain | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Character, goal, setting | Warm-ups, younger writers, 10-minute sessions |
| Medium | + a problem that gets in the way | Homework, writing clubs |
| Challenge | + a twist and a constraint (tense, form, word limit) | Competitions, experienced writers |
Lengths follow the audience: about 300 words for a kids’ story, 800 for teens and 1,500 for adults; flash fiction stays under 200, 500 or 750 words. Essay prompts ask for two reasons (easy), three reasons and a counter-argument (medium), or both sides with named evidence (challenge).
Worked examples
Three story starters for a class of children — seed “class-3a”, easy, with first lines:
1. Write a short story (about 300 words) about a pirate who gets seasick and is searching for a lost pet. It takes place at a desert research camp. Begin with this line: “Every map in the library had my house on it — except the newest one.”
2. Write a short story (about 300 words) about a ferry captain on her last crossing who must find a missing key before sunset. It takes place on a lighthouse island during a storm. Begin with this line: “I had been invisible for three days before anyone noticed.”
3. Write a short story (about 300 words) about a twin who swaps places with her sister for a day and wants to prove everyone wrong. It takes place in a museum after closing time. Begin with this line: “We buried the time capsule on Friday; on Monday it was back.”And the “Blog post” example for an AI, built with the same engine as the AI prompt generator:
You are an experienced blog writer.
Task:
Write a blog post about how to start composting in a small flat.
Audience:
beginners who live in flats with no garden
Steps:
1. Open with a hook that names the reader’s problem
2. Cover the topic in three to five sections with clear headings
3. Close with one specific call to action
Rules:
- Write for general adult readers: plain English, no jargon.
- Do not use these words or phrases: delve, game-changer, in today’s fast-paced world.
Output format:
Format the response in Markdown, with headings and lists where they help.
Tone: friendly.
Length: about 900 words.Tips for teachers and writing groups
- Share the seed, not just the prompt: anyone who enters it with the same options gets the same set.
- Use Challenge prompts sparingly with younger writers — one constraint at a time is plenty.
- Ask writers to check their length with the word counter and their sentences with the readability checker.
- When a student uses an AI tool, ask them to write the prompt themselves — choosing structure, audience and tone is part of the skill.
AI Writing Prompt Generator FAQ
Is this AI writing prompt generator free?
Yes — no sign-up and no limits. The creative prompts come from lists on this page, so they appear instantly and work offline once the page has loaded.
Are the story prompts made by AI?
No. They are combined from hand-written lists of characters, settings, goals, problems, twists, constraints and first lines; only the optional “Improve with AI” step uses a model, on your device.
How does the prompt of the day work?
Today’s date is used as the seed, together with the options you pick, so everyone who chooses the same options today sees the same prompt. Tomorrow brings a new one.
Are the prompts safe for children?
Kids’ prompts only use material tagged for children, and ghost, horror and romance genres are not offered for kids. Always read prompts before handing them out.
Can I make essay prompts?
Yes. Choose Opinion essay for debatable questions at kids, teens or adults level, with instructions that grow from two reasons to arguing both sides.
How do I write a good prompt for an AI writer?
Say what to write and about what, who it is for, the reading level, length and structure, and the tone; add a sample of your own writing so the AI can match your voice, and list words it must avoid.
