Sidereal ascendant = tropical ascendant (from local sidereal time, latitude and the obliquity of date) minus the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa with nutation; times rounded to the minute. Same engine as the kundli generator.

The lagna is a traditional way of naming the part of the sky that was rising at birth. This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice, and it offers no remedies. Everything is computed in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Lagna calculator by date and time of birth

This free lagna calculator finds your lagna — the Vedic ascendant, the rashi that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born — from your date, time and place of birth. It uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard of Indian almanacs, and also gives the lagna lord (lagnesh), the nakshatra and pada of the lagna degree, the navamsa lagna and, for comparison, the Western tropical rising sign.

Below the result is the lagna table for the birth date at the birthplace — the list of all twelve lagnas with their start and end times that panchangs print every day. It is also the answer when the birth time is not known exactly: find the hours that fit and read off the possible lagnas. Rashi names can be shown in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati or Marathi. The lagna is a tradition; this page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice.

How to use the Lagna Calculator

  1. Enter the Date of birth and Time of birth (24-hour clock). Tick Birth time unknown if you only know the date.
  2. Choose the Birth place (Indian cities are listed first) or type the Latitude and Longitude; the Time zone fills in. For old records in local time, set Clock used to local mean time or a fixed offset.
  3. Pick the language for Rashi names in — for example Tamil to see Mesham, Rishabam, Mithunam.
  4. Read the lagna, its lord and its nakshatra in the panel, and the details below it.
  5. Check the Lagna table for the day: the highlighted row is the lagna at your birth time. Press Copy as text to share.

Lagna Calculator features

Lahiri sidereal ascendant

The tropical ascendant from local sidereal time, latitude and the obliquity of date, minus the Lahiri ayanamsa (23.857092° at J2000 plus IAU 2006 precession and nutation), as in Swiss-Ephemeris-based software.

Lord, nakshatra and pada

The lagnesh from the classical sign rulerships, and the nakshatra, pada and nakshatra lord of the exact lagna degree, plus the navamsa (D9) lagna.

Daily lagna table

Every lagna change on the birth date, found by scanning the day in two-minute steps and timing each change to the minute; checked against a published panchang lagna table for New Delhi on two dates.

Boundary warning

When the birth time is within ten minutes of a lagna change, or within a few minutes of a nakshatra edge, the tool says so.

Regional names

Rashi names in Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati and Marathi script with their usual spellings.

Lagna names in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu

Lagnas are named after the twelve rashis. The table gives the Sanskrit name used in most panchangs, the English sign, the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu names, and the ruling planet that becomes the lagna lord.

How the lagna is calculated

The birth time is converted to Universal Time using the browser’s time-zone database, which knows India’s historical offsets, or local mean time. Local sidereal time and the latitude give the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon — the tropical ascendant. Subtracting the ayanamsa (about 23°10′ in 1950 and 24°13′ in 2025) turns it into the sidereal lagna. Its rashi is the lagna, the planet ruling that rashi is the lagna lord, and the 13°20′ nakshatra and 3°20′ pada follow from the same degree. The lagna moves about one degree every four minutes, so each rashi rises for roughly 1½ to 2¾ hours depending on the sign and the latitude.

An automatic test compares the lagna of two published charts (Narendra Modi and Swami Vivekananda on AstroSage, within 0.1°) and the Drik Panchang lagna tables for New Delhi on 15 August 2025 and 1 November 2024 (within 2 minutes), checked October 2026.

Lagna, rashi and rising sign — what is the difference?

The lagna is the rising sign in the sidereal zodiac; the rashi is the Moon’s sign, which many people in India call their sign — find it with the rashi calculator. The Western rising sign uses the tropical zodiac and is usually one sign later, so the Sun, Moon and rising sign calculator may show a different sign for the same birth. For a full chart with all nine grahas, houses and dasha, use the kundli generator.

Lagna Calculator FAQ

How do I find my lagna by date of birth?

Enter the date, time and place of birth. With the date alone the lagna cannot be fixed — it changes about every two hours — but the lagna table shows every lagna of that day, so a rough time narrows it down.

Which ayanamsa does the lagna calculator use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Indian government standard used by most panchangs, with nutation applied.

Can I see the lagna in Tamil?

Yes. Choose Tamil under “Rashi names in” and the lagna and table show the Tamil names, such as மேஷம் (Mesham) or ரிஷபம் (Rishabam).

Why does my lagna differ from another kundli?

Usually the birth time or time zone, or a lagna near a sign boundary — the tool warns when the change is within ten minutes. A different ayanamsa (Raman, KP) can also shift it.

What is the lagna lord?

The planet that rules the lagna rashi: Mars for Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus for Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury for Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon for Karka, the Sun for Simha, Jupiter for Dhanu and Meena, and Saturn for Makara and Kumbha.

Does the lagna decide my future?

No. It names the part of the sky rising when you were born. Astrology has no demonstrated predictive power; enjoy it as tradition, not as advice.
