A life path number calculator that shows its working
The life path number is the best-known figure in Western numerology. This free life path number calculator takes your date of birth, reduces the month, the day and the year separately, adds the three results and reduces the total to a single digit — stopping early at the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Every step is printed, so you can check it by hand or see why two sites gave you different answers.
You can add a name to see its Pythagorean expression number beside the life path, and a second date to see how the two numbers are paired in a published compatibility chart. It is a cultural tradition rather than a measurement: this page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice.

Life Path Number Calculator features
Step-by-step working
Month, day and year are each shown reducing, then the sum, so nothing is hidden.
Master numbers
11, 22 and 33 are kept, with the reduced form named in the note.
Karmic debt flags
Totals that pass through 13, 14, 16 or 19 are marked, as Western books do.
Both reduction methods
If adding every digit gives a different answer, the page tells you.
Name and pairing
Optional expression number and a check against a published pairing chart.
How the life path number is worked out
Take 17 March 1992. The month, 3, is already one digit. The day, 17, becomes 1 + 7 = 8. The year, 1992, becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3. The three results add to 3 + 8 + 3 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5, so the life path number is 5. Because 14 is one of the numbers books call karmic debt, the page flags it.
The same date can be worked by adding all eight digits in a row. Usually the answer is identical, but when a master number appears along the way the two routes can differ. For 4 January 1950 the separate method gives 1 + 4 + 6 = 11, a master number, while adding every digit gives 1 + 9 + 5 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 4 = 20, which reduces to 2. This page uses the separate-parts method and tells you whenever the all-digits route gives a different number.
Master and karmic numbers
If a month, a day, a year or the final sum comes to 11, 22 or 33, most Western books stop there and treat the number as a stronger form of 2, 4 or 6. A few authors reduce everything, and some leave out 33. The numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19 are called karmic debt numbers: when a total passes through one of them, books attach a lesson to it. These are conventions of the tradition, so the page states them as such.

Compatibility and name numbers
The pairing line uses the chart published by Hans Decoz at World Numerology (checked 19 October 2026), where master numbers are reduced first. It is not symmetric: one number may list another as favourable while the reverse is not stated. For a fuller look at two people, use the numerology compatibility calculator; for the number of a name, see the name numerology calculator. If you use the Indian system, the mulank and bhagyank calculator works from the same date.
Life Path Number Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my life path number by birth date?
Reduce the month, the day and the year each to one digit (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add the three, and reduce the sum. The calculator above prints each step.
Why does my result differ from another site?
Some sites add all digits at once, some reduce master numbers, and some use the Chaldean system. This page reduces month, day and year separately and says when the all-digits route differs.
Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?
No. In Western books the life path comes from the birth date; the destiny or expression number comes from the full name. In Indian numerology the bhagyank is a different sum of the date.
Can I calculate a life path number with a name?
The life path comes from the date only. The optional name field gives the Pythagorean expression number so you can see both together.
Does life path compatibility mean anything?
The pairings are popular opinion within numerology, not evidence about relationships. Use them for fun, not for decisions.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
