Soul urge number calculator: the vowels and consonants of your name
This free soul urge number calculator splits a name into its vowels and consonants and turns each group into a single number. In Western numerology the vowels give the soul urge (also called the heart’s desire), said to describe what a person wants inwardly, and the consonants give the personality number, said to describe how others first see them. Together they make up the expression (destiny) number.
The tool writes each vowel’s value above the letter and each consonant’s below it, the way numerology books lay it out by hand, and it explains every Y it finds — the letter that causes most of the disagreements between calculators. Numerology is a tradition with no scientific backing, so read this for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice.

- Read the soul urge and personality numbers, with the sums that produced them.
- Check the letter grid and the Y notes, then use Copy result.

How the soul urge and personality numbers are calculated
Each letter has a value from the Pythagorean chart: A, J, S = 1; B, K, T = 2; C, L, U = 3; D, M, V = 4; E, N, W = 5; F, O, X = 6; G, P, Y = 7; H, Q, Z = 8; I, R = 9. For the soul urge, add the vowels of each part of the name, reduce each part to one digit (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add the parts and reduce again. The personality number does the same with the consonants.
Worked example — Emily Johnson. EMILY has the vowels E (5), I (9) and Y (7), because the final Y has no other vowel beside it: 21, which reduces to 3. JOHNSON has two Os: 6 + 6 = 12, which reduces to 3. The soul urge is 3 + 3 = 6. The consonants are M (4) and L (3) = 7 in EMILY, and J, H, N, S, N = 1 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 5 = 20 → 2 in JOHNSON, so the personality number is 7 + 2 = 9.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Sometimes. A, E, I, O and U are always vowels and W is always treated as a consonant here. The traditional teaching says Y is a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in its syllable — Lynn, Mary, Yvonne — and a consonant when another vowel carries the sound, as in Yolanda or Maya. Software cannot hear pronunciation, so this page uses a spelling rule that matches that teaching for most names: Y is a vowel unless A, E, I, O or U stands directly next to it. Where the two disagree (Bryan, for example) the setting lets you choose.

Soul Urge & Personality Number Calculator FAQ
How do I find my soul urge number?
Add the Pythagorean values of the vowels in each part of your full birth name, reduce each part, then add and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. This soul urge number calculator does it for you and shows every step.
How is the personality number calculated by name?
The same way, using the consonants instead of the vowels.
Why does another calculator give a different number?
Usually because of the letter Y, a different name spelling, or adding all letters before reducing instead of reducing each part first.
Should I use my married name or birth name?
Numerology books normally use the full birth name for these numbers and treat a later name as a secondary influence. Try both.
What if my name has no vowels?
With Y forced to be a consonant, a name like Lynn has no vowels, and the soul urge comes out as 0. The default Y rule counts that Y as a vowel.
Is the soul urge number scientific?
No. It is a numerological tradition, offered for interest and entertainment, not prediction or advice.
