Where almanacs differ
  • Medam 1 and Vishu 2026: the Sun enters Mesha at about 09:35 on 14 April, before 3/5 of the daytime, so by the Kerala rule Medam 1 is 14 April (as in Prokerala’s calendar). Vishu itself is kept on 15 April — the Kerala government holiday and Drik Panchang — because Vishukkani is seen at the first sunrise with the Sun in Mesha. Some calendars therefore print Medam 1 on 15 April.
  • Drik Panchang’s “Sankramam” entries mark the day of the sankranti, not always the first day of the month: Karkidakam Sankramam 16 July 2026 is followed by Karkidakam 1 on 17 July.
  • Deepavali 2027: Kerala keeps Deepavali on Naraka Chaturdashi (28 October here); Drik Panchang’s list shows Diwali on 29 October, the Lakshmi Puja day.
  • Makaravilakku: the date is announced by the Sabarimala temple; it normally follows the Makara Sankranti day (15 January in 2027, when the sankranti falls after sunset on the 14th).
  • Ashtami Rohini 2026: Krishna Ashtami ends minutes before midnight in Thiruvananthapuram, so the page falls back to Ashtami at sunrise (4 September, the Kerala holiday and Drik Panchang date).

Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa for the place shown. Temple, family and printed almanacs can choose a different day for some festivals — follow your local priest or almanac. Rahu kalam and similar periods are shown for tradition, not as advice. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Malayalam calendar: Malayalam date, naal and festivals

This free Malayalam calendar converts any date from 1900 to 2099 to the Malayalam (Kollavarsham) date — for example Thulam 7, 1202 for 24 October 2026 — written in Malayalam script too, and lays out the month as a grid of Gregorian dates with the Malayalam date and the nakshatra (naal) of each day. Tap a day for its panchangam: nakshatra and tithi with end times, yoga, karana, sunrise, sunset, Rahu kalam, Yamagandam and Gulika kalam.

Use it as a Malayalam calendar 2026 or to find the Malayalam date today: press Today, or pick any date to convert. The times are for Thiruvananthapuram by default; Kochi, any listed city, your own location or typed coordinates work as well. The year’s Kerala festivals — Makaravilakku, Attukal Pongala, Vishu, Thrissur Pooram, Karkidaka Vavu, Chingam 1, Onam, Ashtami Rohini, Navaratri, Deepavali and the Mandala season — are listed with the rule used and a CSV download.

How to use the Malayalam Calendar

  1. Pick a Date (any English date to convert) or press Today.
  2. Choose the Place — Thiruvananthapuram by default.
  3. Read the Malayalam month and day, the Kollavarsham year and the panchangam with the day’s nakshatra.
  4. Tap a day in the grid or use the arrows to change month; the day-by-day table lists the Malayalam date, tithi and nakshatra for every date.
  5. Check the festival list, then press Download festivals CSV or Copy Malayalam date.

Malayalam Calendar features

English to Malayalam date

Any Gregorian date from 1900 to 2099 gives its Malayalam month, day and Kollam-era year, in English and Malayalam script.

Kerala month rule

Months start from the Sun’s entry into each sidereal sign, using the Kerala aparahna rule for the first day.

Naal for every day

The nakshatra at sunrise with its Malayalam name — Atham, Thiruvonam, Pooram — and its end time.

Kerala festivals

Vishu, Onam, Thrissur Pooram, Attukal Pongala, Ashtami Rohini, Navaratri and more, checked against published Malayalam calendars.

How the Malayalam calendar works

The Malayalam calendar is solar. A month begins when the Sun enters the next sign of the sidereal zodiac (sankramam): Chingam with Simha, Kanni with Kanya and so on to Karkidakam with Karka. Kerala’s rule fixes the first day: if the sankranti happens before three-fifths of the daytime has passed, that day is day 1; otherwise the month starts the next day. So in 2026 Thulam begins on 18 October because the Sun enters Tula in the evening of the 17th. Months have 29 to 32 days.

The year is the Kollavarsham (Kollam era), which starts on Chingam 1 in mid-August: Kollavarsham 1202 began on 17 August 2026, so the year is the Gregorian year minus 824 from Chingam 1 to December and minus 825 before. Each day is also known by its naal, the nakshatra at sunrise, which sets birthdays and many temple festivals. Positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa and the same engine as the Tamil calendar, which uses the sunset rule instead.

Festival rules, sources and limits

Solar festivals follow the months: Chingam 1, Mandala season on Vrischikam 1, Vishu at the first sunrise with the Sun in Mesha. Nakshatra festivals take the day on which the star covers most of the daylight in that solar month — Thrissur Pooram (Pooram in Medam) and Attukal Pongala (Pooram in Kumbham near the full moon); Dhanu Thiruvathira is the Thiruvathira day nearest before the Dhanu full moon; and Onam is the first day of Chingam with Thiruvonam 2 h 24 min after sunrise. Ashtami Rohini takes Krishna Ashtami at midnight in Chingam. For 2025 to 2027 these match Drik Panchang’s Malayalam calendars, Prokerala’s 2026 month starts and the Kerala 2026 holiday list (checked 24–25 October 2026), except where noted on the page.

Temple festivals are fixed by each temple’s own astrologers and can differ by a day; Sabarimala announces Makaravilakku. This page converts English dates to Malayalam dates only; to go the other way, step to the Malayalam month and read the Gregorian dates in the grid. For star details see the nakshatra finder.
