Tamil calendar: Tamil date today, months and festivals
This free Tamil calendar gives the Tamil month and day for any date from 1900 to 2099 — for example Aippasi 2, Parabhava year for 19 October 2026 — written in Tamil too, with the Thiruvalluvar year, the panchangam at sunrise (tithi, nakshatram, yogam, Rahu kalam, Yamagandam and Kuligai), a month view and the main Tamil festivals of the year.
Use it as a Tamil calendar 2026, 2025 or 2027: pick any date in the year and the tables list when each Tamil month begins and the dates of Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Thai Poosam, Maasi Magam, Panguni Uthiram, Tamil Puthandu, Chitra Pournami, Vaikasi Visakam, Aadi Perukku, Mahalaya Amavasai, Karthigai Deepam and Arudra Darshan. Times are for the place you choose — Chennai by default.

How the Tamil solar calendar works
The Tamil calendar is solar. Each month starts when the Sun enters the next sign of the sidereal zodiac (a sankranti): Chithirai with Mesha, Vaikasi with Rishabha, and so on to Panguni with Meena. In Tamil Nadu, if the sankranti happens before sunset the month begins that day; if it happens after sunset, the month begins the next morning. That is why Aadi 2026 starts on 17 July (the Sun enters Kataka late on 16 July) and Karthigai 2026 on 17 November. Months have 29 to 32 days because the Sun moves faster in January than in July.
The Tamil year begins on Chithirai 1, Tamil Puthandu, in mid-April. Years are named in a 60-year cycle that started again with Prabhava in 1987; the Tamil Nadu government also counts the Thiruvalluvar year, which is 31 years ahead of the Gregorian year from Thai 1 (Pongal). Positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard of the Indian national calendar, from the same astronomy engine as the Hindu calendar converter and panchang today.
| Tamil month | Sign | 2026 start |
|---|---|---|
| Thai | Makara | 14 January |
| Chithirai | Mesha | 14 April |
| Aadi | Kataka | 17 July |
| Purattasi | Kanni | 17 September |
| Aippasi | Thula | 18 October |
| Karthigai | Vrischika | 17 November |
| Margazhi | Dhanus | 16 December |
How festival dates are found, and their limits
Pongal days, Puthandu and Aadi Perukku follow the solar month directly (Thai 1, Chithirai 1, Aadi 18). Thai Poosam, Maasi Magam, Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Visakam, Karthigai Deepam and Arudra Darshan fall on a day in that Tamil month when the given nakshatram is current during daylight, choosing the one just before or at the full moon when there is a choice. Amavasai and Pournami days use the tithi current in the afternoon (aparahna), the time for tarpanam. For 2024 to 2027 these rules reproduce every one of these dates in Drik Panchang’s published Tamil festival lists, for both Chennai and New Delhi (checked 19 October 2026).
Temples and almanacs sometimes choose a different day when a nakshatram or tithi spans two sunrises, and Vakya panchangams use older formulas than the modern (Thirukanitha) calculation here, so a date can differ by one day. Festivals that follow the lunar month, such as Deepavali or Vinayagar Chathurthi, are not listed. Rahu kalam and similar periods are shown for tradition, not as advice — see also Rahu kaal today and the nakshatra finder.

Which Tamil year is 2026?
From Tamil Puthandu on 14 April 2026 to 13 April 2027 it is Parabhava (பராபவ), the 40th year of the cycle. Before that, from 14 April 2025, it was Visuvavasu.

Pick any date in 2027: the month-start table and the festival list switch to that year.
Why does my printed Tamil calendar differ by a day?
Some calendars use the Vakya method or a different rule when a nakshatram spans two days. This page uses modern astronomy and Drik Panchang’s rules.
Does the place matter?
Yes — sunrise, sunset and Rahu kalam change with the place, and very occasionally a month start or festival moves by a day.
