Gemstone calculator by date of birth: what the Vedic tradition assigns
This free gemstone calculator by date of birth shows which ratna (gem) Vedic astrology traditionally links to your birth chart. From the date, time and place of birth it works out your lagna (ascendant) and Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, then reads the planets that rule them: the life stone of the lagna lord, the lucky stone of the 5th-house lord, the fortune stone of the 9th-house lord, the rashi stone of the Moon-sign lord, and the stone of your birth number (mulank).
Each recommendation comes with the tradition’s reasoning, so you can see why a gem is named and where sources disagree. This is a cultural tradition, not science: the page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice, and it is not medical or financial advice. It sells nothing and names no prices.
How to use the Gemstone Calculator
- Enter the Date of birth and the Time of birth. If you do not know the time, tick Birth time unknown; the Moon sign then stands in for the lagna.
- Choose the Birth place or type its latitude and longitude; the Time zone fills in automatically.
- Read the three headline stones: life stone, rashi stone and birth number stone, then the lucky and fortune stones below them.
- Check the table for every graha: its gem, the houses it rules from your lagna, and what the tradition says about it.
- Use Copy result to keep the list. For month-based Western stones, open the birthstone finder.
Gemstone Calculator features
Real lagna and Moon sign
Computed from planetary positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same engine as the kundli generator, with warnings when either sits near a sign boundary.
Reasoning for every graha
House lordship from the lagna sorts each planet into life stone, trikona lord, yogakaraka, lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th (and no kendra or trikona) or mixed.
Works without a birth time
Uses the Moon sign (Chandra lagna), and warns when the Moon changed sign on the day of birth.
Birth number
The mulank — the day of birth reduced to one digit — with its planet and gem.
No sales
No shop links, no prices, no remedies to buy.
The nine gems of the Navaratna tradition
The pairing of gems and planets comes from a Sanskrit verse quoted in Brihat Jataka, Jataka Parijata (2.21) and S. M. Tagore’s Mani-mala (1879), as summarised in the English Wikipedia article on Navaratna (checked 19 October 2026). Hindi trade names vary by region.
| Graha | Gem | Hindi name | Sanskrit in the verse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Ruby | Manik | manikya |
| Moon (Chandra) | Pearl | Moti | muktaphala |
| Mars (Mangal) | Red coral | Moonga | vidruma |
| Mercury (Budh) | Emerald | Panna | marakata |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Yellow sapphire | Pukhraj | pushparaga |
| Venus (Shukra) | Diamond | Heera | vajra |
| Saturn (Shani) | Blue sapphire | Neelam | nila |
| Rahu | Hessonite garnet | Gomed | gomeda |
| Ketu | Cat’s eye | Lehsunia | vaidurya |
How the stones are chosen
Every sign has a ruling planet (Aries and Scorpio Mars, Taurus and Libra Venus, Gemini and Virgo Mercury, Cancer the Moon, Leo the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius Saturn). Counting houses from the lagna sign, the planet that rules the 1st house gives the life stone, the 5th-house lord the lucky stone and the 9th-house lord the fortune stone — the convention of most published gem calculators, though some swap the names “lucky” and “fortune”. A planet that rules both a kendra (4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (5th, 9th) is a yogakaraka and is usually counted as favourable. Gems of planets that rule the 6th, 8th or 12th house and no kendra or trikona are commonly listed as ones to avoid.
Worked example: for a Scorpio lagna, Mars rules the 1st and 6th houses, so red coral is the life stone; Jupiter rules the 5th (Pisces), giving yellow sapphire; the Moon rules the 9th (Cancer), giving pearl. Mercury rules the 8th and 11th, so its emerald is the one such tables tell a Scorpio ascendant to avoid. Someone born on the 17th has birth number 1 + 7 = 8, Saturn, whose gem is blue sapphire.
What this page does not do
Practising astrologers say they weigh much more — planetary strength, dashas, divisional charts — before naming a stone, and traditions disagree about Rahu and Ketu, weight, metal and the day to begin wearing a gem. This tool only reports the basic associations. There is no scientific evidence that gemstones affect health, money or luck, so do not use it for medical, financial or purchasing decisions. The lagna calculator and rashi calculator explain the two signs used here in more detail.
Gemstone Calculator FAQ
How does the gemstone calculator by date of birth work?
It computes your lagna and Moon sign from the birth details, finds the planets that rule them and the 5th and 9th houses, and shows the gem tradition assigns to each planet, plus the gem of your birth number.
Which gemstone is recommended as per kundali?
In the common convention, the life stone is the gem of the lagna lord, with the 5th and 9th lords’ gems as lucky and fortune stones. Sources differ, which is why the reasoning is shown.
Can I find my gemstone without a birth time?
Yes, from the Moon sign, which many sources use when the lagna is unknown. The tool warns if the Moon changed sign on your birth date.
Is my Vedic gemstone the same as my birthstone?
No. Western birthstones go by the month of birth; the Vedic ratna goes by the planets ruling your chart. The birthstone finder covers the month lists.
Do gemstones really work?
There is no scientific evidence that they do. This page describes a cultural tradition for interest and entertainment; it is not medical, financial or any other advice.
Why do other sites suggest a different stone?
They may use another birth time or zone, a tropical zodiac, a different ayanamsa, or their own rules for lucky and fortune stones.
