Mahr calculator: Mahr Fatimi and the minimum mahr
This mahr calculator works out Mahr Fatimi — the sunnah mahr of 500 dirhams of silver — and the minimum mahr of your school, in grams of silver, tola, troy ounces and your own currency. Type the price of silver per gram, per 10 g, per kg, per tola or per troy ounce in rupees, pounds, dollars, dirhams, riyals or any listed currency, and the page shows the method line by line.
Scholars convert the dirham to grams in slightly different ways, so you can choose 3.0618 g (500 dirhams = 1,530.9 g, the figure used by many South Asian and South African muftis), 2.975 g (500 dirhams = 1,487.5 g, IslamQA) or your own figure. There is no live price feed: use the price on the day of the nikah. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Where the figures come from
ʿAʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said the mahr the Prophet ﷺ gave his wives was twelve ūqiyah and a nashsh — half an ūqiyah — which is 500 dirhams (Sahih Muslim 1426). ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, said no wife or daughter of the Prophet ﷺ was given more than twelve ūqiyah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2106), which is 480 dirhams; reports of the mahr of Sayyidah Fatimah differ in the same way, so the page lets you choose. Jaʿfari scholars call 500 dirhams Mahr al-Sunnah.
The Hanafi school sets a minimum of ten dirhams, citing the narration “there is no mahr less than ten dirhams” (al-Bayhaqi); the Maliki school sets three dirhams. The Shafiʿi and Hanbali schools set no minimum: any agreed thing of value is valid, as in the hadith “even an iron ring” (Sahih Muslim 1425). No school sets a maximum, but scholars advise against amounts that make marriage hard.
| Dirham weight | Mahr Fatimi (500) | 10 dirhams | 3 dirhams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0618 g | 1,530.9 g (131.25 tola) | 30.618 g | 9.185 g |
| 2.975 g | 1,487.5 g (127.53 tola) | 29.75 g | 8.925 g |
What is a reasonable mahr?
Mahr belongs to the bride and is agreed between the two families before the nikah; it can be paid at once or deferred. Many couples choose Mahr Fatimi as a sunnah amount, others agree a sum that suits their means. In the UK, US and India the value is usually written in the local currency in the nikah certificate, worked out at the silver price of that day.
For other duties of the same family occasion, see the zakat calculator, the Islamic inheritance calculator (an unpaid mahr is a debt on the estate) and the tola converter.
