Hanafi: one kaffarah covers all the fasts broken in the same Ramadan when none was paid in between, so 1 kaffarah for 1 Ramadan.

Hanafi: the options follow the order in the hadith — fasting first, and feeding only for someone unable to fast.

Dates for the 60 consecutive fasts

The first run (Sun 1 Nov 2026 – Wed 30 Dec 2026) avoids Ramadan, both Eids and the days of tashrīq in the Umm al-Qura calendar.

Hanafi: ½ ṣāʿ of wheat for each poor person ≈ 1.633 kg — Darul Ifta, Darul Uloom Deoband, fatwa 626/756/SN=7/1438: half a ṣāʿ = 1,633 g of wheat (a full ṣāʿ taken as twice that, 3,266 g). The Hanafi school allows giving the value of the food in money (General Iftaa’ Department of Jordan, fatwa 4164).

Each fast broken on purpose is also made up with one day, and sincere repentance is part of it. Schools differ on when kaffarah is due and how it is counted; this page shows the methods and their sources and is not a fatwa. Confirm your case with a local scholar or mosque.

Kaffarah calculator for a fast broken on purpose

This kaffarah calculator works out the expiation for a Ramadan fast broken deliberately, following the hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (1936): a man who had broken his fast was asked whether he could free a slave, then whether he could fast two consecutive months, then whether he could feed sixty poor people. Choose your school and how the fast was broken, and the page shows how many kaffarahs are due, the dates of the 60 consecutive fasts and the cost of feeding 60 people in your currency.

The schools differ on which acts call for kaffarah and on how several broken fasts are counted, so the page shows the rule it applied and where it comes from. Each broken fast is also made up with one day (qaḍāʾ), with sincere repentance.

This is a calculator, not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a local scholar or mosque.

How to use the Kaffarah Calculator

  1. Choose your School (madhhab) and How was the fast broken?
  2. Enter the number of Ramadan fasts broken on purpose. For the Hanafi school, also enter In how many different Ramadans?, or tick the cautious view to count every fast.
  3. Under Dates for the 60 consecutive fasts, pick a start date. The page warns if the run would cross Ramadan, Eid or the days of tashrīq and suggests the earliest clean start.
  4. Under Cost of feeding 60 people, check the food per person, then value it with your local price, a dated authority rate or your own amount.
  5. Press Copy result to keep the summary.

When kaffarah is due in each school

The Mufti of the Federal Territories (Malaysia) summarises the main difference: the Hanafi and Maliki schools require kaffarah and a make-up day for deliberately eating or drinking in a Ramadan fast, while the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools reserve kaffarah for intercourse and require only the make-up day for eating or drinking. Ja‘fari rulings also require kaffarah for deliberately breaking the fast and treat the three options as a choice.

Counting differs too. Hanafi texts (Fatawa ‘Alamgiri) hold that one kaffarah covers several fasts broken in the same Ramadan if none was paid in between; some Hanafi muftis are stricter where the fast was broken by intercourse. The other schools count each day separately. Kaffarah applies to a Ramadan fast, not to a voluntary or make-up fast.

The 60 days and the feeding, worked through

The fasts must follow each other without a break. Fasting is not allowed on Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha or the days of tashrīq, and Ramadan days count for Ramadan, so a run that crosses them is broken. Starting on 1 January 2027, for example, reaches Ramadan 1448 on 8 February 2027 (Umm al-Qura); the earliest uninterrupted start after that is 10 March 2027. How illness or menstruation affects a run is discussed by each school — ask.

Feeding: 60 people × ½ ṣāʿ of wheat (1.633 kg) = 97.98 kg in the Hanafi measure, or 60 × 600 g = 36 kg with one mudd. At ₹40 a kilogram that is ₹3,919.20 or ₹1,440. Singapore’s MUIS gives S$4 per person (April 2026), so S$240. Whether cash may be given in place of food is itself a difference of opinion, shown below the result.

For fasts that cannot be made up at all, use the fidya calculator; to count make-up fasts, the qaza namaz and roza calculator; for dates, the Hijri date converter.

Kaffarah Calculator FAQ

What is the kaffarah for breaking a fast?

Fasting 60 consecutive days, or, for someone who cannot, feeding 60 poor people, as in Sahih al-Bukhari 1936. The broken fast is also made up.

How much is kaffarah in money?

Sixty times the food for one poor person. With the Hanafi ½ ṣāʿ of wheat that is 97.98 kg of wheat at your local price; MUIS in Singapore uses S$4 a person. The kaffarah calculator multiplies it out.

Is kaffarah due for eating on purpose (Hanafi)?

Yes, in the Hanafi and Maliki schools. In the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools kaffarah is for intercourse only.

I broke several fasts in one Ramadan — how many kaffarahs?

In the Hanafi school, one covers them if none was paid in between; other schools count each day. Ask a scholar for your case.

Can I fast two Hijri months instead of 60 days?

Scholars discuss this; the safe count shown here is 60 consecutive days.

Can one poor person be fed for 60 days?

The Hanafi school allows feeding one person on 60 days; others want 60 different people. Ask locally.
