Format Instagram captions with line breaks that stick
Instagram strips empty lines and trailing spaces from captions and bios, so a carefully spaced paragraph often arrives as one dense block. The Instagram Caption Formatter fixes that: write your caption with normal blank lines, and the tool inserts an invisible character on each empty line so the spacing survives when you paste it into the app. You also get a live character count against the 2,200-character limit, hashtag and mention counters, and a preview that shows exactly where the “…more” cut-off lands.
It works for feed posts, Reels, carousel captions, comments and your bio. Nothing is uploaded — the caption stays in your browser, and your draft is remembered on this device until you clear it.
How to use the Instagram Caption Formatter
- Type or paste your caption in Your caption. Press Enter twice wherever you want a blank line.
- Pick what to fill blank lines with: Braille blank is invisible and works best; the dot option is the visible “.” style many creators use.
- Watch the counters — characters out of 2,200, hashtags, mentions — and the warning badges.
- Check the Preview: everything after the “…more” point is hidden until someone taps, so put your hook in the first line.
- Press Copy formatted caption and paste it into Instagram.
Instagram Caption Formatter features
Blank lines Instagram keeps
Each empty line gets a Braille blank (U+2800), no-break space or Hangul filler so paragraphs stay separated on iPhone, Android and the web.
Accurate limits
Counts Unicode characters the way Instagram does (emoji count as more than one), with a hard stop at 2,200 and warnings above 5 hashtags and 20 mentions.
Hashtag advice
Flags more than five hashtags, duplicate tags and non-clickable links so your caption stays within Instagram’s five-hashtag limit.
“…more” preview
Shows the roughly 125-character / two-line preview Instagram displays in the feed before truncating.
Clean-up options
Trims spaces at line ends and can convert old-style “.” spacer lines into invisible blanks.
Draft saved locally
Your caption stays in this browser so you can come back and finish it.
How the invisible line-break trick works
When you post, Instagram removes any line that contains nothing but whitespace, and trims spaces at the start and end of lines. It does not remove lines that contain a character — even one it cannot display. The formatter therefore places a single invisible character on every blank line. The Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800) is the most reliable choice because every phone font includes it and it renders as empty space; the no-break space (U+00A0) and Hangul Filler (U+3164) are alternatives if a particular app build strips Braille. You can copy any of these individually from the Invisible Character tool.
Leading spaces inside a line are converted to no-break spaces, so indented lists and centred-looking text keep their indent too.
Instagram caption limits (as of 2025)
| Limit | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Caption length | 2,200 characters | Emoji count as 1–7 characters each depending on the emoji |
| Hashtags per caption | 30 maximum | Instagram recommends up to 5; a 5-hashtag cap on new posts and Reels began rolling out in late 2025 |
| @mentions per caption | 20 | Mentions beyond this are blocked |
| Feed preview before “…more” | ≈ 125 characters or 2 lines | Varies slightly by device and font size |
| Bio length | 150 characters | Line breaks in the bio need the same invisible characters |
| Comment length | 2,200 characters | Same as captions |
Tips for captions that get read
- Put the hook — a question, a number or a bold claim — in the first line; it is all most people see before “…more”.
- Keep paragraphs to one or two sentences. Blank lines between them make the expanded caption scannable on a phone.
- Hashtags work in the caption or the first comment; use a few specific ones rather than a wall of generic tags.
- Links are not clickable in captions. Use “link in bio” and track it with the UTM Builder.
- Match your image to the current grid and feed sizes — see Social Media Image Sizes — and pick emoji from the Emoji Picker.
Instagram Caption Formatter FAQ
How do I add line breaks to an Instagram caption?
Write the caption here with blank lines where you want them, press Copy formatted caption and paste it into Instagram. Each blank line contains an invisible character, so Instagram keeps the spacing instead of collapsing it.
Why does Instagram remove my spaces and blank lines?
Instagram trims whitespace from captions and bios when you save them. Lines that contain only spaces are treated as empty and deleted. An invisible non-space character on the line stops that.
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags. The counter here uses the same Unicode counting, so if it shows 2,200 or less you are safe.
How many hashtags should I use?
Five at most. Since December 2025 Instagram limits posts and Reels to five hashtags, counted across the caption and its comments together, so extra tags are blocked or removed. The formatter flags anything above five, and the hashtag generator suggests a focused set.
Does the invisible character show up on Android or iPhone?
No. The Braille blank and no-break space display as empty space on every modern device. If you ever see a small box, switch to the no-break space option and copy again.
Can I use this for my Instagram bio or comments?
Yes. The same trick keeps line breaks in your bio (150-character limit) and in comments. Paste the formatted text in the same way.
