Social media image sizes for 2025, in one table

Every network crops, pads or shrinks pictures in its own way, and the rules keep changing — Instagram moved its profile grid to 3:4 tiles in January 2025, X added portrait images, YouTube Shorts grew to three minutes. This social media image sizes cheat sheet lists the current recommended dimensions and aspect ratios for profile photos, covers and banners, feed posts, Stories and Reels, video and ads on Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, WhatsApp, Threads, Snapchat, Discord and Telegram, with the notes that matter: safe zones, cropping behaviour and file limits.

Under the table is a resizer. Drop in a photo, pick any size from the list, choose whether to crop to fill (cover) or pad with a background colour (contain), drag the picture to set the crop and download a correctly sized JPG, PNG or WebP. It all happens in your browser — the image is never uploaded.

How to use the Social Media Image Sizes

  1. Use Search sizes or the platform buttons to find the placement you need — for example “story”, “cover” or “LinkedIn”.
  2. Read the size, aspect ratio and notes. Press Resize on a row to load that size into the resizer.
  3. Drop your image onto the drop area (or click to choose one).
  4. Choose Cover (crop) to fill the frame, then drag the preview to position the crop — or Contain (pad) and pick a background colour.
  5. Pick a format and quality, then press Download resized image. The file is named after the platform and placement.

The sizes that cover almost everything

If you only make a few assets, these five cover most placements across networks:

SizeRatioUse it for
1080 × 13504:5Instagram, Facebook, Threads and LinkedIn feed posts; TikTok photo posts
1080 × 19209:16Instagram/Facebook Stories and Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, WhatsApp Status, Snapchat, Pinterest video
1200 × 6301.91:1Link previews (Open Graph) on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp and Telegram
1280 × 72016:9YouTube thumbnails; X and LinkedIn video; blog hero images
400 × 400 to 800 × 8001:1Profile photos everywhere — upload the largest and let each network shrink it

Cover vs. contain: which should you choose?

Cover scales the image until it fills the target frame and crops whatever sticks out. It is the right choice for photos, where a little cropping is fine and a border would look odd. Drag the preview to keep faces or products in frame, and remember the platform may crop again (Instagram’s grid shows 3:4 of a 4:5 post, X headers lose a strip top and bottom).

Contain scales the image down until the whole picture fits and fills the rest with a background colour. Use it for logos, screenshots, posters and anything with text or edges that must not be cut. For a transparent background choose PNG and leave the colour as is — it only shows in JPG output, which cannot store transparency.

Upscaling a small picture to 1080 px or more makes it soft; if the preview says “upscaled”, start from a bigger original where you can. To change only the dimensions without a target placement, the Image Resizer and Crop Image tools give finer control, and the Image Compressor gets files under upload limits.

Notes on platform cropping (2025)

  • Instagram grid: every post is shown as a 3:4 tile on your profile. A 4:5 post loses a little from each side; a square loses more; landscape posts lose most. Design 4:5 posts with the subject inside the central 3:4 area.
  • Facebook Page cover: uploaded at 851 × 315 but displayed 820 × 312 on desktop and 640 × 360 on phones — the sides are cropped on mobile and the top and bottom on desktop, so keep logos and text in the middle.
  • YouTube banner: TVs see the whole 2560 × 1440; desktop sees a wide strip; phones see only the central 1546 × 423 safe area. Put your channel name and schedule inside that safe area.
  • X header: the circular profile photo overlaps the bottom-left corner and up to 60 px may be trimmed from the top and bottom on some screens.
  • Vertical video (9:16): app controls, captions and the progress bar sit over the bottom 20–35% and the right edge (Meta’s Reels ad guide reserves the bottom 35%); keep text in the upper middle of the frame.
  • For YouTube thumbnails specifically, you can grab existing ones with the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader; for caption spacing use the Instagram Caption Formatter.

Social Media Image Sizes FAQ

What is the best Instagram post size in 2025?

1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) for feed posts — it takes the most screen space in the feed. Because the profile grid now shows 3:4 tiles, keep the important part of the image inside the centre so it survives the grid crop. Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920 (9:16).

What size should a Facebook cover photo be?

Upload 851 × 315 pixels for a Page cover. It displays at 820 × 312 on desktop and 640 × 360 on phones, so keep text and faces centred. Personal profile covers display at 16:9 — 1200 × 675 works well.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB from a computer. The YouTube app allows only 2 MB, so 1280 × 720 is the safe choice there.

Are these sizes still correct?

They are the recommended values as of 2025 from the platforms’ own help pages and current best practice. Networks change specs without notice, so for a large print run or ad campaign confirm in the platform’s ad manager first.

Does the resizer reduce quality?

Scaling down keeps photos sharp; the JPG quality slider controls compression (90 is visually lossless for most images). Scaling a small image up cannot add detail, and the preview warns you when that happens.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizer uses your browser’s canvas on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and no files are stored.

Why does the downloaded file have a white background?

Contain mode pads the image with the chosen background colour, and JPG files cannot be transparent. Pick PNG and cover mode, or set the colour to match your page.
