YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube link and download its thumbnail in HD, SD and every smaller size.

Works with watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed, live and mobile links — or just the 11-character video ID.

Thumbnail images are loaded directly from YouTube’s public image server (i.ytimg.com). Nothing you paste is sent anywhere else.

Download any YouTube thumbnail in full HD

The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader pulls the cover image of any public YouTube video in every size YouTube stores — from the full-HD 1280 × 720 “maxresdefault” down to the tiny 120 × 90 preview. Paste a normal watch link, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts link, an embed code address or just the video ID, and each available version appears with its real pixel size and a one-tap download button.

Creators use it to back up their own thumbnails, editors grab them for a video brief or a mood board, teachers drop them into slides, and designers study what makes a click-worthy cover. The images come straight from YouTube’s public image server, are saved with a clear file name such as aqz-KE-bpKQ-maxresdefault.jpg, and work the same on a phone, tablet or computer.

How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

  1. Copy the video’s link — on a phone, tap Share → Copy link; on a computer, copy the address bar.
  2. Paste it into the “YouTube video link or ID” box, or press Paste link. Thumbnails load automatically.
  3. Compare the sizes: the largest available version is shown first, with its exact width × height.
  4. Press Download JPG under the size you want, or Download all (ZIP) to save every size at once.
  5. Use Copy image URL if you only need a direct link to the picture, for example in a document or a chat.

YouTube Thumbnail Downloader features

Every link format

Understands watch?v=, youtu.be, /shorts/, /embed/, /live/, mobile m.youtube.com and music links, timestamps, playlists and tracking parameters such as ?si=.

Real downloads

Images are fetched as files and saved with the video ID and size in the name, instead of opening in a tab you have to save manually.

No fake HD

When a video has no HD or SD thumbnail, YouTube serves a grey 120 × 90 placeholder. The tool detects that and hides it rather than offering a useless file.

All sizes at once

See maxresdefault, sddefault, hqdefault, mqdefault and default side by side and grab them together as a ZIP.

Works on phones

The layout is built for small screens, and the Paste link button saves fiddling with long addresses on a phone keyboard.

YouTube thumbnail sizes explained

YouTube automatically creates several copies of every video’s thumbnail. The two widescreen versions (maxresdefault and mqdefault) are true 16:9 images. The 4:3 versions (sddefault, hqdefault and default) are letterboxed, so a normal widescreen thumbnail has black bars above and below it — crop them off with the Crop Image tool if you need a clean picture.

File nameSize (pixels)ShapeAlways available?
maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 72016:9No — only when the source is HD
sddefault.jpg640 × 4804:3 (letterboxed)Usually — missing on some older or low-resolution videos
hqdefault.jpg480 × 3604:3 (letterboxed)Yes
mqdefault.jpg320 × 18016:9Yes
default.jpg120 × 904:3Yes

Why is there no HD thumbnail for some videos?

The 1280 × 720 file only exists when the video was uploaded at 720p or higher, or when the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail of at least that size. Very old uploads, low-resolution phone clips and some live streams only have the smaller versions. In that case hqdefault (480 × 360) is the best image YouTube has, and no downloader can produce a sharper original. You can upscale it with the Image Resizer, but enlarging a small picture will look soft.

For YouTube Shorts, the stored thumbnails are still landscape images taken from the vertical video, so expect the frame to be centred with blurred or black sides.

Thumbnails belong to the creator — use them fairly

A thumbnail is part of the creator’s work, and copyright in it normally belongs to them (or to whoever made the image). Downloading one does not give you the right to reuse it. Safe uses include saving thumbnails of your own videos, keeping a private reference or mood board, and showing a thumbnail with clear credit and a link when you review, teach or comment on the video. Do not upload someone else’s thumbnail as your own, use it in ads, or put it on products.

If you need a thumbnail for your own video, design one at 1280 × 720 — the social media image sizes guide lists YouTube’s current requirements, and the YouTube Embed Code Generator helps you show a video on your site the official way.

YouTube Thumbnail Downloader FAQ

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?

Paste the video link into the box and press Download JPG under “Maximum resolution (HD)”. That is the 1280 × 720 maxresdefault image. If that card is missing, the video has no HD thumbnail and the next size down is the best available.

Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/… link exactly as you copied it. The tool extracts the video ID and loads the same thumbnail sizes as for a normal video.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?

Viewing and saving a publicly available image for personal reference is generally fine, but the thumbnail is still protected by copyright. Ask the creator before reusing it, and credit them when you show it for commentary or teaching. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why does the downloaded image have black bars?

The sddefault, hqdefault and default sizes are 4:3 images. When the video is widescreen, YouTube fills the extra space with black bars. Choose maxresdefault or mqdefault for a clean 16:9 picture.

Can I get the thumbnail of a private or deleted video?

No. YouTube removes the thumbnails of private and deleted videos from its image server, so the tool will tell you that no thumbnails exist for that ID.

Where is the file saved on my phone?

On Android it goes to the Downloads folder. On iPhone and iPad, Safari saves it to the Files app (Downloads); open it there and tap Share → Save Image to put it in Photos.

Do I need an app, account or API key?

No. The YouTube thumbnail downloader runs in your browser, is completely free and only talks to YouTube’s public image server.
