Convert images between JPG, PNG, WebP and BMP
Sometimes a picture is simply in the wrong format: a website saved it as WebP and your editor will not open it, a form accepts only JPG, a logo needs a transparent PNG, or an old program insists on BMP. The Image Converter turns almost any image your browser can display — JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG, AVIF and ICO — into JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP.
It handles the conversions people search for most, such as PNG to JPG, WebP to JPG, JPG to PNG and PNG to WebP, for one file or a whole batch. Everything runs locally in your browser, so files never travel to a server and there is no upload queue to wait for.
How to use the Image Converter
- Drop your images on the upload area, click it to pick files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can mix formats in one batch.
- Choose the format to convert to: JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP.
- For JPG and WebP, set the quality — 90% is a good default. For JPG and BMP, pick the colour that replaces transparent areas.
- Check the new size next to each file; changing a setting re-converts every image instantly.
- Download single files with their own button, or press “Download all” to save every converted image in one ZIP.
Image Converter features
Many input formats
Reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG, AVIF and ICO — anything your browser can decode — and converts a mixed batch in one go.
Four output formats
JPG for compatibility, PNG for lossless quality and transparency, WebP for the smallest files, or uncompressed 24-bit BMP for legacy software.
Transparency handled properly
PNG and WebP keep transparent backgrounds. For JPG and BMP you choose the fill colour instead of getting an unexpected black background.
Built-in BMP encoder
Browsers cannot save BMP on their own, so the converter writes a standard Windows bitmap file byte by byte.
Size shown for every file
Each converted image lists its dimensions, old and new file size and the percentage change.
Private by design
No upload, no account and no watermark. Converted copies also drop hidden EXIF data such as GPS location.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs BMP: which format should you choose?
Each format makes a different trade-off between file size, quality and features. As a rule of thumb, photos go to JPG or WebP; anything with sharp edges, text or transparency goes to PNG or WebP; and BMP is only for software that specifically asks for it.
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | Lossy | No | Photos, email, forms, print shops |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Logos, screenshots, diagrams, text |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Websites and apps — smallest files |
| BMP | None (24-bit) | No | Legacy Windows software, some devices |
| GIF (input) | Lossless, 256 colours | On/off only | Simple animations |
Popular conversions explained
- PNG to JPG — shrinks photos that were saved as PNG, often dramatically. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose.
- WebP to JPG or PNG — makes images saved from modern websites open in older editors, office software and printing kiosks.
- JPG to PNG — useful when an app requires PNG. It cannot restore detail already lost to JPG compression, and the file usually gets bigger.
- JPG or PNG to WebP — Google’s published study found lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, which helps pages load faster.
- SVG to JPG or PNG — turns a vector graphic into pixels at the SVG’s own size (small icons are rendered at 1024 px). For a custom resolution use the SVG to PNG converter.
- HEIC to JPG — iPhone photos use HEIC, which most browsers cannot decode natively. Use the dedicated HEIC to JPG converter for those.
- Formats this page cannot write have their own converters: JPG to AVIF, TIFF to JPG (multi-page TIFF), GIF to PNG (every frame), ICO to PNG (every icon size) and SVG to PDF (vector).
What does not survive a conversion
Converting redraws the picture on a canvas and saves a fresh file, so camera metadata (EXIF), embedded colour profiles and animation are not carried over. Animated GIFs and animated WebPs become a still image of the first frame.
A lossy file converted to a lossless one cannot get its detail back: a JPG saved as PNG looks identical to the JPG, just in a larger file. To make files smaller in the same format, use the image compressor; to change dimensions too, use the image resizer.
Image Converter FAQ
How do I convert PNG to JPG?
Drop the PNG files on the image converter, choose “JPG”, set the quality (90% is a good default) and pick a background colour for any transparent areas. Then download each JPG or all of them as a ZIP.
How do I convert WebP to JPG?
Add the WebP images, keep “JPG” selected and download. Pictures saved from websites become ordinary JPGs that open in any photo viewer, editor or upload form.
Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so it preserves exactly what the JPG contains, including compression artefacts. Expect a larger file that looks the same.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
JPG and BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose — white by default. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Most browsers cannot decode HEIC on their own, so the converter explains this instead of failing silently. Use the HEIC to JPG tool, which includes a HEIC decoder.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and a built-in BMP encoder. Your files never leave your device.
