Remove the background from any photo, privately
This free tool will remove the background from a photo and give you a transparent PNG: a portrait for a profile picture or CV, a product shot for an online shop listing, a pet, a logo photographed on a table. An AI model finds the subject, a set of refinement steps cleans up the edges, and a brush lets you fix anything the AI got wrong.
Unlike most background removers, nothing is uploaded. The AI runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, so your pictures stay on your phone or computer — which matters for ID photos, children and unreleased products. The only download is the model itself, and your browser keeps it for next time. You can process several photos in one go and save them all as a ZIP.
How to use the Remove Background
- Choose an AI model: “People & portraits” for people, “Products & objects” for things, pets and full-body shots.
- Drop one or more photos on the upload box (or paste with Ctrl+V). The first time, the model downloads with a progress bar.
- Check the result on the checkerboard. Drag “Before / after” to compare with the original, and adjust “Edge softness” or “Shrink / grow edge” if needed.
- To fix mistakes, pick “Erase” and paint over leftover background, or “Restore” and paint over parts of the subject that went missing. Undo steps back one stroke.
- Press “Download PNG”. With several photos, click each one in the list to check it, then press “Download all (ZIP)”.
Remove Background features
Three open models
MODNet for portraits, U²-Netp for objects and full-body shots, and MediaPipe for an instant people mask — all under the Apache 2.0 licence.
True transparency
Semi-transparent hair and soft edges are kept as partial transparency, and background colour is removed from edge pixels to avoid halos.
Restore and erase brush
Fix the mask with your finger, a pen or the mouse; removed areas show in red while you paint.
Before/after slider
Slide across the image to compare the cut-out with the original.
Batch and ZIP
Add up to 30 photos, check each one, then save them all as transparent PNGs in a single ZIP.
Full resolution
The mask is computed at up to 2,048 px and scaled to your photo’s size — up to 4,096 px on the long side.
How the background is removed
Each model reads a reduced copy of your photo and predicts, for every pixel, how likely it is to belong to the subject. The result is an alpha matte: white for subject, black for background and greys in between for hair, fur and motion blur. The tool scales that matte up to your photo and removes stray specks. For the two smaller models, whose masks are coarser, “Snap edges to the photo” (on by default for them) runs a guided filter (He, Sun and Tang) that pulls the edge onto the real edges in the picture. Finally, edge colours are cleaned with a fast foreground-estimation method (Forte and Pitié), so wisps of hair carry no trace of the old wall when you put them on a new background.
| Model | Best for | Download | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|
| MODNet (portrait matting) | Head-and-shoulders and half-body photos of people | 13 MB | Apache-2.0 |
| U²-Netp (salient object) | Products, pets, cars, full-body people | 4.6 MB | Apache-2.0 |
| MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter | Quick people masks on slow devices | 0.25 MB | Apache-2.0 |
What works well and what doesn’t
- Good: one clear subject, in focus, that stands out from the background — a person against a wall, a product on a table, a pet on grass.
- Hair and fur: MODNet keeps loose strands as partial transparency; on busy backgrounds some strands may vanish or keep background colour. Try “Shrink / grow edge” and the brush.
- Similar colours: black hair on a dark background or a white shirt on a white wall can be cut too tightly or not enough. Restore or erase those parts by hand.
- Glass, smoke and transparent objects are treated as solid or removed; true see-through cut-outs need manual editing.
- Several subjects: people models keep everyone; the object model favours the most prominent thing. Erase what you don’t want.
- Full-body shots: MODNet is trained on portraits and can lose legs or feet — switch to “Products & objects”.
After the cut-out
A transparent PNG is ready for slides, documents, stickers and design tools. To put the subject on a plain colour for a passport, ID or marketplace photo, use Change Background Color; to place it on a new scene or gradient, use Change Background; to keep the scene but soften it like a portrait-mode camera, use Blur Background. Image Shadow adds a soft drop shadow so a product doesn’t look pasted on.
Remove Background FAQ
How do I remove the background from an image for free?
Drop your photo on this page, wait a few seconds for the AI, then press “Download PNG”. The background becomes transparent. There is no sign-up, watermark or limit, and your photo isn’t uploaded.
Is it safe to use for ID photos and personal pictures?
Yes. The AI runs entirely in your browser. Your photos never leave your device; only the model file is downloaded from a public server and cached by your browser.
Why is part of my subject missing or some background left?
The AI guessed wrong where the subject and background look alike. Pick “Erase” or “Restore” and paint over the spot, or try another model — “Products & objects” for things and full-body photos, “People & portraits” for faces and hair.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads the model (0.25–13 MB depending on your choice) and the AI runtime (about 4 MB). After that they come from the browser cache, and each photo usually takes one to five seconds.
What file format keeps the transparency?
PNG and WebP both keep transparency; WebP files are smaller. JPG cannot store transparency, which is why this tool doesn’t offer it — use Change Background Color for a JPG with a white background.
Can I remove backgrounds from many photos at once?
Yes. Drop up to 30 photos together. Each is processed in turn; click one to check or touch it up, then press “Download all (ZIP)”.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, on recent Android and iOS browsers. Each photo takes a few seconds longer than on a computer; the “Quick people mask” model is the fastest choice on older phones.
