Change the background of a photo in a few clicks
Want yourself in front of a beach instead of a bedroom wall, a product on a clean studio gradient, or a team photo on your company colours? This free background changer cuts out the subject with an AI model and places it on a new background — a picture of your own or a smooth two-colour gradient — while you watch.
You can move and zoom the new background, soften it so it looks further away, and nudge the subject’s brightness and colours so the two parts belong together. All of it runs in your browser: your photos are not uploaded anywhere, and the AI model is downloaded once and cached.
How to use the Change Background
- Choose the AI model — “People & portraits” for people, “Products & objects” for things, pets and full-body shots — then drop your photo on the upload box.
- Under “New background”, pick a gradient preset or your own two colours and direction, or switch to “My image” and choose a background picture.
- With your own image, select “Move background” and drag on the preview to position it; use “Background zoom” to scale it and “Background blur” to push it out of focus.
- Use “Subject brightness” and “Match subject colours to the background” until the light looks consistent. Fix edges with “Restore”, “Erase”, “Edge softness” and “Shrink / grow edge”.
- Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and press “Download image”.
Change Background features
Your image or a gradient
Use any photo as the new background, or a linear or radial gradient with six presets and custom colours.
Position, zoom and blur
The background always fills the frame; drag it into place, zoom up to 300% and add blur for a natural depth-of-field look.
Colour matching
Shift the subject’s average colour towards the new background and adjust its brightness so it doesn’t look cut out and pasted in.
Clean, halo-free edges
Edge pixels have the old background’s colour removed before compositing, so hair doesn’t carry a fringe from the original wall.
Private and free
No upload, account or watermark; the full-size result is saved straight from your browser.
Making a background swap look real
Our eyes spot a fake background mostly through mismatched light, not through the cut-out itself. A few habits make a big difference:
- Match the light direction. If the sun in the new background comes from the left, choose a photo of yourself lit from the left. No slider can move a shadow across a face.
- Match the camera height and distance. A head-and-shoulders portrait taken at eye level sits well in front of a distant scene, not in front of a close-up wall shot from above.
- Push the background back. Real portraits rarely have a perfectly sharp background. A “Background blur” of 5–12 adds instant depth.
- Warm or cool the subject. “Match subject colours” at 20–40% borrows the background’s colour cast, for example a warm sunset tone, without changing skin colour too much.
- Soften the edge slightly. An “Edge softness” of 1–3 px hides the tiny steps in a cut-out at normal viewing size.
How it works and which model to pick
The subject is separated by one of three openly licensed models running in your browser through WebAssembly: MODNet portrait matting (Apache 2.0, 13 MB), which keeps soft hair edges; U²-Netp salient-object detection (Apache 2.0, 4.6 MB), which picks out the most prominent object and suits products, pets and full-body shots; and Google’s MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter (Apache 2.0, 0.25 MB) for a quick result. For the two smaller models the mask is refined with a guided filter so its edge follows the photo, and in every case edge colours are cleaned with fast foreground estimation before the subject is composited onto the new background.
Limitations are the same as for any automatic cut-out: strands of hair against a busy background, a subject whose colours match the background, and see-through objects such as glasses, glass bottles and lace are the hardest parts. The brush lets you correct them by hand.

Change Background FAQ
How do I change the background of a photo for free?
Drop your photo here, wait for the AI to cut out the subject, then choose a gradient or upload your own background image. Adjust position and colours and press “Download image”. It is free and needs no sign-up.
Can I use my own picture as the new background?
Yes. Select “My image” and choose any JPG, PNG or WebP. It is scaled to fill the frame; drag with “Move background” to position it, and zoom or blur it with the sliders.
Why does my subject look pasted on?
Usually the lighting differs between the two photos. Try “Match subject colours to the background”, adjust “Subject brightness”, blur the background a little and soften the edge by 1–2 px.
Can I change the background of a product photo?
Yes. Pick the “Products & objects” model, which finds the main object rather than a person, then choose a clean gradient such as “Soft studio grey”.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Both your photo and the background image stay on your device. Only the AI model is downloaded from a public CDN and cached by your browser.
What size is the saved image?
The same size as your original photo, up to 4,096 pixels on the long side. The new background is fitted to that size.
