Convert GIF to PNG and extract animation frames
A GIF converted to PNG keeps everything that made it look right: the exact colours, the hard pixel edges and the transparent background. PNG simply drops GIF’s 256-colour limit and its animation. This GIF to PNG converter saves the first frame as a single PNG or splits an animated GIF into a numbered PNG sequence, one complete image per frame.
That makes it a handy GIF frame extractor for sprite work, tutorials, presentations, memes and video editing — anywhere you need individual frames rather than a moving picture. Frames are reconstructed exactly as a browser displays them, and the whole job runs in your browser without uploading anything.
How to convert GIF to PNG
- Drop your .gif files onto the upload area, or click to select them.
- Under Frames, choose First frame only or Every frame.
- Keep Keep transparent areas ticked for see-through backgrounds, or untick it to fill them with a colour.
- Browse the frame cards — each shows its number and display time — and untick any you don’t need.
- Download single frames, or press Download all as ZIP for the whole sequence, named file-frame-01.png, file-frame-02.png and so on.
GIF to PNG Converter features
Full frames, pixel-exact
Frames are rebuilt pixel for pixel as a browser shows them, including optimised animations that store only the areas that change.
Transparency kept
GIF’s transparent colour becomes fully transparent pixels in the PNG.
Numbered sequence
Frame numbers are zero-padded, so files sort correctly in any folder or video editor.
Pick and choose
Untick frames before downloading; only the selected ones go into the ZIP.
Handles awkward files
Interlaced GIFs, per-frame colour tables and files with junk after the last frame are read correctly.
No upload
A built-in GIF decoder does the work inside your browser.
GIF and PNG compared
GIF dates from 1987, and the GIF89a revision of 1989 added the extensions that make animation and transparency possible. PNG was created in the mid-1990s, partly as a patent-free replacement for GIF’s LZW compression, and it does a better job for still images.
| GIF | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Up to 256 per frame | Up to 16.7 million, plus alpha |
| Transparency | One colour, fully transparent or not | Full alpha channel with 256 levels |
| Animation | Yes | No (APNG is a separate extension) |
| Compression | LZW, lossless | DEFLATE, lossless |
| Typical use | Short loops, reactions, simple graphics | Screenshots, logos, graphics, single frames |
Why “Every frame” gives complete pictures
To save space, most animated GIFs are optimised: after the first frame, each frame stores only the rectangle that changed and relies on the previous frames still being visible underneath. Saving those raw rectangles would give you a pile of fragments. The converter instead plays the animation internally, applies each frame’s disposal method — leave it, clear it, or restore what was there before — and saves the complete picture at every step.
Each frame card lists how long the frame stays on screen. Delays of 0 or 0.01 s are shown as 0.1 s, which is how browsers actually play them.
Ideas for extracted frames
- Pick the best moment of a reaction GIF as a still for a thumbnail or a slide.
- Edit individual frames, then rebuild the animation in your editor of choice.
- Turn a screen-recording GIF into numbered steps for a tutorial or documentation.
- Cut a single frame into tiles or a grid with the Image Splitter.
- Prefer the moving version, only smaller? Convert it to animated WebP with GIF to WebP, or make a fresh GIF from a clip with Video to GIF.
GIF to PNG Converter FAQ
How do I extract all frames from a GIF as PNG?
Choose “Every frame”, drop the GIF and press “Download all as ZIP”. You get one PNG per frame, numbered in playback order.
Does GIF to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Pixels that are transparent in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG, as long as “Keep transparent areas” is ticked.
Will converting GIF to PNG improve quality?
It won’t add detail or colours that the GIF doesn’t have, but it won’t lose any either. PNG is lossless, so the PNG looks exactly like the GIF frame.
Why are the PNGs bigger than the GIF?
An animated GIF shares one palette-based file across all frames, while each PNG is a separate full-colour image with an alpha channel. A single frame is usually similar in size to a one-frame GIF.
Can I turn a PNG sequence back into a GIF?
Not on this page — it only reads GIFs. If your source is a video, the Video to GIF tool creates a GIF directly.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. For long animations with hundreds of frames, extract every frame and untick the ones you don’t need to keep the ZIP small.
