A YouTube tag generator that counts characters like YouTube does
YouTube gives you 500 characters for tags, but it does not count them the way you might expect: every comma between tags counts, and a tag that contains a space is treated as if it were wrapped in quotation marks — two extra characters each. This YouTube tag generator builds a tag list from your video title and shows the real total, so the list you paste into YouTube Studio is never rejected for being too long.
From a title such as “How to Make Masala Chai at Home – Easy Recipe” it finds the main keyword, then writes the exact phrase, variations (easy…, at home, the year), long-tail searches (best…, step by step, for beginners), optional Hindi and Hinglish phrases, your channel name and a few broad tags from a hand-written niche list. Press tags to switch them on or off; the meter updates as you go.
One honest note before you spend time on tags: YouTube’s own help centre says they play a minimal role in discovery. They are worth a minute, not an hour — the generator gives you a sensible list quickly so you can spend the rest on your title, thumbnail and description.
How to generate YouTube tags
- Type or paste the Video title or topic. The main keyword is detected automatically; type your own in Main keyword if you want a different one.
- Optionally add your Channel or brand name, tick Add Hindi / Hinglish search phrases for an Indian audience, and choose whether to add a tag with the year.
- Check the tag groups. Each tag shows the number of characters it uses toward 500; press a tag to remove it, or add your own with Add your own tags.
- Watch the meter. If you go over 500, press Fit to 500 — it keeps the most important tags in order and drops the rest.
- Press Copy tags and paste into the Tags box under “Show more” in YouTube Studio’s video details.
YouTube Tag Generator features
YouTube’s counting rule
Letters and spaces, plus one character per comma, plus two for the implied quotes around each multi-word tag — the rule in YouTube’s Data API documentation.
Priority order
Exact keyword first, then variations, long-tail, your own tags, channel name and broad tags, so Fit to 500 always drops the least specific ones.
Hinglish and Hindi
Adds phrases Indian viewers really type, such as “masala chai kaise banaye” and “masala chai recipe in hindi”.
Your own tags
Add tags such as common misspellings — the one case where YouTube says tags genuinely help.
Copy, save, export
Copy as a comma-separated list, save sets in this browser, or download TXT and CSV (with each tag’s character cost).
How YouTube counts the 500 characters
YouTube’s Data API documentation (videos resource, page updated 8 October 2026) states that the tags field has a maximum of 500 characters, that commas between tags count toward the limit, and that a tag containing a space is handled as though wrapped in quotation marks, with the quotes counted. Creators commonly report the same behaviour in YouTube Studio’s Tags box.
Worked example from this page: the tag chai costs 4; masala chai costs 11 letters and spaces + 2 for quotes = 13; the pair masala chai, chai costs 13 + 4 + 1 comma = 18. The 16 tags generated for the sample title use 273 letters and spaces, 15 commas and 26 quote characters — 314 of 500.
YouTube metadata limits (checked 14 October 2026)
| Field | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tags | 500 characters in total, commas and implied quotes included | YouTube Data API, videos resource (updated 8 Oct 2026) |
| Title | 100 characters; no < or > | YouTube Data API, videos resource |
| Description | 5,000 bytes; no < or > | YouTube Data API, videos resource |
| Hashtags | Up to 3 shown by the title; more than 60 → all ignored | YouTube Help, hashtags page |
| Role of tags | “Minimal role” in discovery; useful for commonly misspelled topics | YouTube Help, “Add tags to your videos” |
Tips that make tags worth the minute
- Put the exact phrase people search for first; it is also the phrase your title should start with.
- Add one or two common misspellings or alternative spellings (chai / chay, biryani / biriyani). This is the use YouTube itself names.
- Keep tags about this video. Tags for unrelated popular topics count as misleading metadata under YouTube’s spam policies.
- Hashtags are different from tags: they go in the title or description and are visible to viewers. Build those with the Hashtag Generator.
YouTube Tag Generator FAQ
How many characters can YouTube tags have?
500 in total. Commas between tags count, and each tag containing a space counts two extra characters for the implied quotation marks. This YouTube tag generator shows the total calculated that way.
Do YouTube tags still matter in 2026?
A little. YouTube’s help centre says tags play a minimal role in discovery and are most useful when your content is commonly misspelled. The title, thumbnail and description matter much more.
Why does my count differ from a simple character counter?
A plain counter sees only letters and spaces. YouTube also counts the commas and two quote characters for every multi-word tag, so “masala chai” costs 13, not 11.
Should I add Hindi or Hinglish tags?
If your audience searches that way, yes. Phrases such as “kaise banaye” and “in hindi” describe how many Indian viewers type searches; add them only when the video is actually in Hindi or for that audience.
Where do I paste the tags?
In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Details, press “Show more” and paste into Tags. YouTube splits the list at the commas.
Is anything I type uploaded?
No. The keyword detection and tag list are built by code in your browser; saved sets stay in this browser’s local storage.
