How much is the Tatkal charge for each class?
This Tatkal charges calculator shows the extra amount Indian Railways adds to a normal ticket when you book under the Tatkal scheme. Choose the class — second sitting, sleeper, AC chair car, AC 3-tier (3AC), AC 2-tier (2AC) or executive chair — and enter the basic fare per passenger. The calculator applies the percentage, then keeps the result between the minimum and maximum charge for that class, and multiplies by the number of passengers.
People often search for “Tatkal charges for 3AC” or “for sleeper class” because the amount is not a flat figure: it depends on the fare of your journey. A short trip sits at the class minimum, a long trip hits the class maximum, and only trips in between pay the plain percentage.
How to use the Tatkal Charges Calculator
- Pick the class you are booking.
- Enter the basic fare for one passenger — the base fare, not the total on the payment screen.
- Set the number of passengers (up to six on one ticket).
- Read the Tatkal charge per passenger and the total, and see which rule applied: percentage, minimum or maximum.
- Open Rule values only if a notice changes the percentage or the band.

The charges used (rules as of 24 October 2026)
These values are taken from the railway corporation’s Tatkal FAQ page, read on 24 October 2026, which states that the charge is 10% of the basic fare for second class and 30% for all other classes, subject to the table above. Press reports date the last revision of the sleeper and AC amounts to December 2015. The page itself carries no date and I could not open the underlying Railway Board circular, so treat the table as the published figure and check your booking screen.
The same FAQ page says Tatkal is not allowed in First AC, and that confirmed Tatkal tickets are not refunded on cancellation. Some trains also set a minimum distance for Tatkal, and a ticket for a shorter run may be charged on that minimum, which this calculator does not model.
| Class | % of basic fare | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second sitting (2S) | 10% | ₹10 | ₹15 |
| Sleeper (SL) | 30% | ₹100 | ₹200 |
| AC chair car (CC) | 30% | ₹125 | ₹225 |
| AC 3-tier (3A) | 30% | ₹300 | ₹400 |
| AC 2-tier (2A) | 30% | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| Executive chair (EC) | 30% | ₹400 | ₹500 |
Worked examples
Sleeper with a basic fare of ₹600: 30% is ₹180, which sits between ₹100 and ₹200, so the charge is ₹180. Sleeper with a basic fare of ₹250: 30% is only ₹75, so the ₹100 minimum applies. AC 3-tier with a basic fare of ₹1,500: 30% is ₹450, above the ₹400 maximum, so ₹400 is charged. Second sitting with a basic fare of ₹120: 10% is ₹12, inside the ₹10 to ₹15 band, so ₹12. For four passengers in AC 2-tier at ₹1,000 each, 30% is ₹300, the ₹400 minimum applies, and the total Tatkal charge is ₹1,600.
What is not included
The calculator works on the basic fare. Reservation fee, superfast charge, catering, GST on eligible classes and payment-gateway charges are all separate, so the total on the booking screen will be higher. Premium Tatkal is dynamically priced, rising as seats fill, so there is no fixed formula to model; its price appears only on the booking screen.
Before booking, find the opening date and time with the train ticket booking date calculator, and once you have a seat, decode your berth with the berth position finder.
