Advanced: routing server and estimate
The free FOSSGIS server allows one request per second and car trips up to 1,500 km in a straight line. You can use your own Valhalla server.
Used only when routing is unavailable: road ≈ straight line × this (1.2–1.4 is typical).

Routing by Valhalla on the public server of FOSSGIS e.V. · Data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), contribute/report error · search by Nominatim · places list: Natural Earth (public domain).

Times, breaks and downloads are worked out in your browser. When you press “Get road distance”, the stop coordinates go to the public Valhalla routing server of FOSSGIS e.V., and any place name not in the built-in list goes to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim. Map tiles load only after you open the map.

Road distance and drive time between places

This road distance calculator finds the driving distance and drive time between two places — or a trip with up to ten stops — along real roads, not as the crow flies. Pick a city from the built-in list, type any address, or enter latitude and longitude, then press Get road distance. You get the distance by road in kilometres and miles, the driving time at typical free-flow speeds, the straight-line distance for comparison and the route on a map.

It also works as a drive time calculator with speed: enter your own average speed, how long you rest and how often, and the time you set off, and it shows the total travel time with breaks and your arrival time. Routes come from Valhalla, an open-source routing engine, on OpenStreetMap road data, using a free public server — no sign-up and no key.

How to use the Road Distance & Drive Time Calculator

  1. Type the start in box A and the destination in box B. Pick from the list, type an address, or type “lat, lon”. Use Add stop for places on the way.
  2. Choose car, bike or walk and, for a car, whether to avoid tolls, motorways or ferries.
  3. Press Get road distance. Names not in the list are looked up on OpenStreetMap first.
  4. Optionally enter your average speed, a break pattern and a start time to see the total time and arrival.
  5. Press Show on OpenStreetMap for a street map, download a GPX file for a sat-nav app, or copy the summary.

How the road distance is worked out

When you press the button, the coordinates of your stops go to the route service of Valhalla on a server run by FOSSGIS e.V. for the OpenStreetMap community. Valhalla searches the road graph for the quickest route, using each road’s type, speed limit, one-way rules and turn restrictions, and returns its length and time. The page draws the route and adds up each leg.

Driving time assumes typical free-flowing speeds: there is no live traffic, no roadworks and no time spent in towns waiting at lights beyond what the router models. In busy cities or on congested highways, allow more time — or enter your own average speed. A trip computer’s average speed from a similar past journey is a good figure to use.

Example: New Delhi to Jaipur is about 294.6 km by road and 5 h 01 min of free-flow driving (route computed 24 Oct 2026). The straight line is about 231 km, so the road is roughly 1.28 times longer. With a 15-minute break every 2 hours, leaving at 09:00, you would arrive at about 14:31.

Breaks, speed and arrival time

Breaks are added after every full block of driving: with 15 minutes every 2 hours, a 5-hour drive gets two breaks (after 2 and 4 hours), and a drive of exactly 4 hours gets one. The arrival time is plain clock arithmetic and does not change time zones. For long trips, the UK Highway Code (rule 91) advises a break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving.

Free server, limits and estimates

The FOSSGIS server allows at most one request per second, so this page only asks when you press the button, waits at least a second between requests, remembers answers for the session and shows the OpenStreetMap attribution. It also refuses car trips whose stops are more than 1,500 km apart in a straight line. For such trips — or when the server cannot be reached — the page shows a clearly marked estimate: the straight-line distance times a detour factor (1.3 by default). Ballou, Rahardja and Sakai (2002) measured average factors of about 1.20 in the US, 1.31 in India and 1.40 in England. You can also enter the address of your own Valhalla server under Advanced.

For the straight-line distance only, use the distance calculator; for the area you can reach in 30 minutes, the drive-time map; to plan charging on an electric car trip, the EV road trip planner.

Road Distance & Drive Time Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate the road distance between two cities?

Type both cities, pick them from the list and press Get road distance. The answer is the length of the quickest road route on OpenStreetMap, in km and miles.

How is drive time calculated?

By default it is the router’s free-flow time for each road on the route. If you enter an average speed, the time is the road distance divided by that speed. Breaks are then added on top.

Does it include traffic?

No. There is no live or historical traffic, so allow extra time at busy hours.

Why does it differ from my phone’s map app?

Apps use their own road data, traffic and route choices, so distances often differ by a few per cent and times by more.

Can I use it for road distance in India?

Yes. The built-in list has 195 Indian cities, including every state and union territory capital, and any address can be looked up on OpenStreetMap.

Is it free?

Yes. It uses a free public routing server under a fair-use policy, so requests are limited to one per second.
