A luggage size checker for carry-on and checked bags
This luggage size checker tells you whether your bag meets the cabin, personal-item or checked-bag limits of the airlines you are likely to fly. Enter the bag’s length, width and depth in centimetres or inches — wheels and handles included — and its weight in kilograms or pounds, and every airline’s published limit is compared side by side with a clear fits, borderline or too big result and the reason.
It covers the questions people search before a trip: luggage size for international flights, luggage sizes in cm, whether a 55 × 40 × 20 cm bag is allowed as hand luggage, and whether a US-style 22 × 14 × 9 inch carry-on fits on airlines that measure in centimetres. Limits for nine airlines were read from their own baggage pages, and you can add your own airline’s limits from your booking.
How to use the Luggage Size & Weight Checker
- Choose Cabin bag, Personal item or Checked bag.
- Measure the bag at its widest points, including wheels, handles and pockets, and enter the three sides; pick cm or inches. Changing the unit converts what you typed.
- Enter the packed weight if you want it checked, and choose your cabin class (some airlines allow more weight in business).
- Open My airline’s limits to add the size and weight from your ticket for any airline not listed.
- Read the table: the reason column says by how much a bag is too long, too heavy or over the total size. Copy the check if you want to keep it.
Luggage Size & Weight Checker features
Any orientation
Your three sides are compared longest-to-longest, so it does not matter which way round you enter them.
Size, total size and weight
Some airlines set length × width × depth, others a total of the three (115 cm, 158 cm or 62 inches), and some no weight limit at all for carry-on — each is checked as published.
Centimetres and inches, kilograms and pounds
Limits are compared in the unit the airline publishes, so 22 × 14 × 9 inches is never rounded into a false fail.
Borderline warning
Within 5 mm (0.2 in) of a limit is flagged, because soft bags bulge and gate sizers are strict.

Common luggage sizes in cm and inches
These are the patterns in the airline pages read for this tool; the table under the result shows each airline’s exact figure. Use the Length Converter and Weight Converter for other sizes.
| Bag | Typical limit | In the other unit |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin bag, many airlines in Asia and Europe | 55 × 40 × 20 cm, 7–8 kg | 21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 in |
| Carry-on, US airlines | 22 × 14 × 9 in | 56 × 36 × 23 cm |
| Cabin bag by total size | 115 cm (L + W + H) | 45 in |
| Personal item | 40 × 30 × 15 cm to 45 × 36 × 20 cm | 16 × 12 × 6 in to 18 × 14 × 8 in |
| Checked bag, one piece | 158 cm total, 23 kg economy / 32 kg premium | 62 in, 50 lb / 70 lb |
Luggage size for international flights: what to watch
- The number of bags and the total checked weight depend on your fare, route and frequent-flyer status; the limits here are per bag.
- Most airlines will not accept any single checked bag over 32 kg (70 lb), even if you pay for extra weight — this protects baggage handlers.
- Flying from India, Air India and IndiGo allow one 7 kg cabin bag in economy (Air India: 115 cm in total), and Emirates limits cabin bags to 115 cm in total when you board in India.
- Basic or light fares often include only a personal item that fits under the seat; a full-size cabin bag must be paid for.
- Plan what goes in which bag with the Packing List Generator.
Luggage Size & Weight Checker FAQ
What is the standard carry-on luggage size in cm?
There is no single standard. 55 × 40 × 20 cm (or 55 × 40 × 23 cm) with 7–8 kg is common in Asia and Europe; US airlines use 22 × 14 × 9 inches, about 56 × 36 × 23 cm, often with no weight limit. Check your bag against each airline above.
How does the carry-on size checker handle inches?
For airlines that publish limits in inches, your bag is converted to inches before comparing, and the other way round for limits in centimetres, so a bag measured in either unit gets the right answer.
Is a 22-inch suitcase a carry-on?
Usually the 22 inches is the height of the case; whether it fits depends on all three sides including wheels. Enter the exact measurements — many 22-inch cases are 23 or 24 inches with wheels and handle and fail at the gate.
What is the maximum checked bag size?
For most airlines one checked bag may measure up to 158 cm (62 in) in total length + width + height and weigh up to 23 kg (50 lb) in economy, with 32 kg (70 lb) for premium cabins on some airlines. Larger or heavier bags are charged as oversize or not accepted.
Why does my bag show as borderline?
It is within half a centimetre of a limit. Soft bags can be squeezed, but hard cases cannot, and gate sizers have no tolerance, so allow a margin.
Is this baggage allowance calculator up to date?
Each airline row shows the date its page was read. Airlines change rules without notice, so confirm the limits on your booking before you fly.
