Remove a PDF watermark — when it can really be removed
Some PDF watermarks are separate objects sitting on top of the page, and those can be taken off cleanly. Others are flattened into the page picture and cannot. The Remove PDF Watermark tool is honest about the difference: it inspects your PDF, lists exactly what it found that can be removed, shows a before/after preview, and tells you plainly when there is nothing it can remove.
It looks in three places. Annotations — watermarks, stamps and comments added on top of the page in PDF editors. Layers (optional content groups) — watermarks placed on their own layer, often named “Watermark” or “Draft”. And page content — text, images or graphics drawn identically on most pages, which is how many programs stamp “CONFIDENTIAL”, “DRAFT” or a logo across a document, including content explicitly tagged as a watermark.
Use it on documents you own or are allowed to edit, such as your own drafts, files exported with a trial watermark you have since licensed, or internal papers that are now final. The PDF is analysed in your browser and is never uploaded.
How to remove a watermark from a PDF
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area. The tool analyses every page and lists what it found.
- Review the findings. Likely watermarks are ticked for you; untick anything you want to keep, and tick other items you want gone.
- Check the Before and After previews, stepping through pages with the arrows.
- Tick “I own this document or have permission to remove its watermark”.
- Press “Remove selected items” and download the cleaned PDF.
Remove PDF Watermark features
Finds watermark annotations
Watermark, stamp and other annotation types are counted and can be removed by type, while form fields are left alone.
Removes watermark layers
Content on a layer such as “Watermark” or “Draft” is deleted along with the layer itself, not just hidden.
Detects repeated objects
Text, images and graphics drawn identically on most pages are found by comparing each page’s drawing instructions.
Recognises tagged watermarks
Watermarks that the creating program marked as watermark artefacts are picked up and pre-selected.
Before and after preview
Every change is shown on the real page before you download, so nothing disappears by surprise.
Keeps everything else intact
Only the selected objects are cut out; fonts, colours and text that follow them are preserved, and text stays selectable.
Which watermarks can be removed — and which cannot
When the watermark is part of a picture, removing it would mean repainting the image underneath — guessing at content that is no longer there. This tool does not attempt that and will say so when it finds nothing removable.
| How the watermark was made | Removable here? |
|---|---|
| Added as a watermark or stamp annotation in a PDF editor | Yes |
| Placed on its own layer (optional content) | Yes |
| Drawn as identical text, image or graphic on many pages | Usually — it appears under “Repeated on most pages” |
| Tagged as a watermark artefact by the program that added it | Yes |
| Part of a scanned page or a photo of a document | No — it is pixels in the image |
| Different on every page (e.g. includes the recipient name and page number) | Usually not |
Use it responsibly
Watermarks often protect someone’s rights: a publisher’s preview, a stock image licence, a confidential document trail. Removing a watermark from material you do not own or are not licensed to modify can infringe copyright or breach an agreement. The tool asks you to confirm you have permission before it lets you download, and it is intended for your own documents and files you are entitled to clean up.
If you are the author and simply want a different label, remove the old one here and add a new one with Watermark PDF or a status stamp with Add Stamp to PDF.
Tips
- The “Repeated on most pages” list can also include headers, footers, page borders and logos. Untick anything that should stay and watch the After preview.
- Removing text drawn in an embedded font is shown as “text in an embedded font” because its characters cannot be read directly; the preview shows what it is.
- After cleaning, check the document properties with the PDF Metadata Editor — some programs also write “watermarked” or a licence note into the title or keywords.
- Removing items does not always shrink the file much; to reduce size afterwards, use Compress PDF.
Remove PDF Watermark FAQ
Can every watermark be removed from a PDF?
No. Watermarks stored as separate objects — annotations, layers or repeated drawing instructions — can be removed. A watermark that is part of a scanned image or photo cannot be separated from the picture, and the tool will tell you when that is the case.
How do I remove a “DRAFT” or “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark from my PDF?
Add the PDF and look for the word in the findings, usually under “Repeated on most pages” or “Layers”. Keep it ticked, check the After preview, confirm you have permission, then press “Remove selected items”.
Is it legal to remove a watermark from a PDF?
It depends on who owns the document and what you are allowed to do with it. Removing watermarks from your own files is fine; removing them from someone else’s copyrighted or licensed material may not be. Only use the tool on documents you have the right to modify.
Why does it say no removable watermark was found?
The watermark is probably part of a page image (common in scans), drawn differently on each page, or the PDF has only one page so repeated content cannot be detected.
Will removing the watermark damage the rest of the page?
Only the selected objects are removed and the drawing state they set (fonts, colours) is preserved for the content that follows. Always check the After preview, and keep your original file.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The analysis and the removal happen entirely in your browser.
