Remove a password from a PDF you can open
Typing the same password every time you open a bank statement, payslip or e-ticket gets old fast. The Unlock PDF tool removes the password from a PDF you are allowed to open: type the password once and download an unprotected copy that opens straight away in any app, merges cleanly with other files and uploads to portals that reject encrypted PDFs.
It also lifts owner-password restrictions — the settings that grey out printing, copying or editing in a PDF that otherwise opens without a password. Those restrictions are only flags, so no password is needed to remove them.
This is not a password cracker. If a PDF needs a password to open and you don’t know it, this tool cannot help, and it never tries to guess. Use it only for documents you own or are authorised to change. Everything runs inside your browser with the open-source qpdf engine; the file and password are never uploaded or stored.
How to remove a password from a PDF
- Drop the protected PDF onto the upload area or click it to choose the file.
- Read the security check: it tells you whether the file needs a password to open, only has restrictions, or isn’t protected at all.
- If it needs a password, type it in PDF password (either the open password or the owner password works).
- Press Unlock PDF — or Remove restrictions for a restricted file.
- The tool checks the result and downloads yourfile-unlocked.pdf, which opens without any password.
Unlock PDF features
Security check first
See whether a PDF needs an open password, which actions an owner password blocks, and which encryption it uses (RC4, AES-128 or AES-256).
Every standard encryption type
Handles 40-bit and 128-bit RC4, AES-128 and AES-256 PDFs created by Acrobat, Word, banks, government portals and scanners.
Removes restrictions
Print, copy, edit and form-filling restrictions are removed along with the encryption, so the copy behaves like a normal PDF.
Clear wrong-password message
A mistyped password gets a plain message and nothing else changes — try again as often as you need.
Verified output
The unlocked copy is reopened with a separate PDF engine to confirm that it needs no password and carries no restrictions.
No upload, no storage
The qpdf engine runs as WebAssembly in your tab. Your password is held only in memory while the page is open.
Open password, owner password and what “unlocking” means
A PDF can carry two passwords. The open (user) password encrypts the content: without it the file cannot be read at all, which is why you must type it here. The owner password controls permissions such as printing and copying. When a file has only an owner password, its contents are still encrypted, but with a key any PDF reader can compute — the restrictions are a request that well-behaved software honours, not a lock.
Unlocking rewrites the PDF without its encryption dictionary. Text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept exactly as they were; only the security layer is removed.
Common situations
- Bank and card statements often use a password built from your name and date of birth. Unlock them once before filing or forwarding them to an accountant.
- Payslips and Form 16 from HR systems are frequently protected with a PAN or employee ID. An unlocked copy can be combined with other documents in Merge PDF.
- Portals that reject protected files — visa, loan and university applications — need an unlocked copy. If the upload limit is tight, shrink it afterwards with Compress PDF.
- Sending it on safely: if the unlocked document must travel again, add a new password of your own with Protect PDF.
When a PDF won’t unlock
If the tool says the password is incorrect, check Caps Lock, the keyboard language and the exact format the sender used (for example capital letters in a name, or DDMMYYYY versus DD-MM-YYYY for a date). If it says the file could not be read, the PDF may be damaged or incomplete — try Repair PDF, or download it again. Files protected with digital rights management (DRM) systems rather than standard PDF passwords cannot be opened here.
Unlock PDF FAQ
How do I remove a password from a PDF?
Open the PDF in Unlock PDF, type its password and press “Unlock PDF”. An unprotected copy is downloaded; your original file is not changed.
Can this tool unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. It removes a password you know. It does not guess, crack or bypass open passwords, and it should only be used on documents you own or are authorised to change.
Why can I remove restrictions without a password?
A PDF with only an owner password opens for everyone, so its content key is available to any reader. Printing and copying restrictions are flags that software is asked to respect, so a clean copy can be saved without them.
Is it safe to type my PDF password here?
Yes. The password is used by the qpdf engine running inside your browser and is never sent anywhere or saved. Closing the tab clears it.
Does unlocking change the content of the PDF?
No. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. Only the encryption and permission settings are removed.
Which encryption types are supported?
All standard PDF security: RC4 40-bit and 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256 (revisions 2 to 6), as created by Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, banks and most PDF software.
