Printable lined paper in any ruling, ready in seconds

Out of notebook paper, or need a very specific ruling? This lined paper generator prints college, wide or narrow ruled paper, or any custom line spacing from 3 mm to 40 mm, on A4, US Letter, A5 or Legal sheets. Add the classic red margin line on the left (or both sides), a name and date header for school work, hole-punch marks for a binder, and choose the colour and weight of the lines so they print as faintly or as boldly as you like.

Turn on the three-line handwriting guide and the generator switches to primary writing paper: a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline for every row, with an adjustable gap between rows — the layout used to teach letter heights in early primary school. Pair it with the handwriting practice sheet for traceable words.

The preview updates as you change options, and the sheet prints straight from your browser or downloads as a vector PDF or a PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Lined Paper Generator

  1. Choose a ruling: college (7.1 mm), wide (8.7 mm), narrow (6.35 mm) or Custom with your own spacing.
  2. Pick the line colour and weight. Light blue or grey is the usual choice; black at 0.3 mm gives a bold ruling for low-vision writers.
  3. Set the margin line (left, both or none), the top and side margins, and an optional header with name, date or title lines.
  4. For young writers tick 3-line handwriting guide, then set the height of each set and the gap between sets.
  5. Choose paper size, orientation and the number of pages, then Print lined paper or download the PDF or PNG.

Lined Paper Generator features

Standard rulings built in

College, wide and narrow rule match the spacings used on loose-leaf paper in the US, UK and India, and Custom accepts any spacing in millimetres.

Red margin line and header

A classic margin line 24 mm from the edge, on the left or both sides, plus optional Name / Date / Title lines at the top.

Primary handwriting guides

Sets of three lines with a dashed midline for learning letter heights, with your own set height and gap.

Any colour and weight

Light blue, grey, green or any colour for the lines, from hairline 0.05 mm to bold 1 mm.

Binder-ready

Optional hole-punch marks and a wider side margin so lines never disappear into the rings.

Multi-page PDF

Up to 30 pages in one vector PDF — a term’s worth of paper in a single small file.

College, wide and narrow rule explained

The names come from American loose-leaf paper and are now used everywhere. The generator uses the standard spacings:

RulingLine spacingTypical use
Wide rule8.7 mm (11⁄32 in)Primary and middle school, large handwriting
College (medium) rule7.1 mm (9⁄32 in)High school, college, most adult notes
Narrow rule6.35 mm (¼ in)Small handwriting, dense notes, pocket notebooks
Gregg rule8.7 mm with a centre lineShorthand — use Wide plus a custom margin
A4 “feint” rule (UK/India)8 mmExercise books and exam answer sheets — use Custom at 8 mm

Handwriting paper for early learners

Primary writing paper uses three lines per row. Tall letters (b, d, h, k, l, t and capitals) reach the top line, small letters (a, c, e, m, n, o) stop at the dashed midline, and letters with tails (g, j, p, q, y) drop below the baseline into the gap. A set height of 19–25 mm suits the first year of school; 13–16 mm suits the second and third years; by 10 mm most children can move to wide-ruled paper. Keep the gap between sets at least a third of the set height so descenders have room.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% / Actual size so the spacing you chose is what lands on the paper. The PDF carries the exact page size.
  • If your printer leaves a blank strip at the edge, raise the side margin to 10–12 mm; lines then start inside the printable area.
  • For double-sided paper print the PDF with “flip on long edge”; the margin line will be on the left of odd pages and the right of even pages unless you choose “Left and right”.
  • Want squares instead of lines? The graph paper generator makes grids and dot grids; the Cornell notes template adds a cue column and summary box.

Lined Paper Generator FAQ

What spacing is college ruled paper?

College rule (also called medium rule) has lines 7.1 mm apart (9⁄32 inch) with a margin line about 32 mm from the left edge. Choose “College” and the generator sets exactly that.

Can I make lined paper with a red margin on the right as well?

Yes. Set Margin line to “Left and right” — useful for double-sided printing or for annotated note-taking.

How do I print primary handwriting paper with a dotted middle line?

Tick “3-line handwriting guide”. Each row gets a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. Set the set height (for example 20 mm) and the gap between rows (for example 8 mm).

Which paper sizes are supported?

A4 (210 × 297 mm), US Letter (8.5 × 11 in), A5 and US Legal, each in portrait or landscape. The PDF is created at the real size, so it prints correctly from any PDF reader.

Is the lined paper free and watermark-free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit and no watermark; the pages are generated in your browser and never uploaded.

Why do my printed lines look thicker than the preview?

Printers render thin lines at their own minimum width, often 0.1–0.15 mm. Choose a lighter colour rather than a thinner line if the ruling feels heavy.
