How ISO A, B and C sizes work
ISO 216 sizes share the aspect ratio 1 : √2 (about 1 : 1.414), so folding a sheet in half gives the next size with the same shape. A0 is one square metre (841 × 1189 mm); A1 is half of that, and so on down to A10. B sizes sit between A sizes, and the C series of ISO 269 is for envelopes: an A4 letter fits flat in a C4, or folded once in a C5.
To enlarge A4 onto A3, the scale is 420 ÷ 297 ≈ 141.4% and the area doubles; to reduce A3 to A4, use 70.7%.
Paper sizes in pixels
Pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI, rounded to a whole pixel. 72 DPI gives PDF points (an A4 page is 595 × 842) and 96 DPI is the CSS pixel. Photo print sizes chart
Labs sell prints in inches (4 × 6, 5 × 7, 8 × 10) or centimetres (10 × 15, 13 × 18, 20 × 30). Pixels needed = inches × DPI: 4 × 6 in is 1200 × 1800 px at 300 DPI, or 600 × 900 at 150 DPI, which suits large prints viewed from a distance. Most cameras shoot 3:2, so 4 × 6 and 8 × 12 need no crop, while 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 are squarer and trim the edges.

A4 vs US Letter, and the other North American sizes
US Letter (8.5 × 11 in, 215.9 × 279.4 mm) is about 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter than A4. A4 onto Letter needs 94.1%; Letter onto A4 97.3%. Legal is 8.5 × 14 in and Tabloid 11 × 17 in (Ledger when turned sideways). ANSI A to E (A is Letter, B is Tabloid) and ARCH A to E (9 × 12 up to 36 × 48 in) are drawing sizes.
Indian and traditional sizes
India follows the ISO A series through IS 1064, whose 2022 amendment added FS (215 × 345 mm), a long foolscap-style sheet common in Indian offices. British sizes survive in printing: foolscap folio (8 × 13 in), Royal (20 × 25 in) and Double Crown (20 × 30 in). Names such as Demy and Crown meant different sizes in different trades, so they are not listed. JIS B5 is 182 × 257 mm; ISO B5 is 176 × 250 mm.

141.4%, because every A size is √2 times larger than the one below. Use 70.7% to reduce A3 to A4.
What size is legal paper?
US Legal is 8.5 × 14 in (215.9 × 355.6 mm). India’s FS size is 215 × 345 mm.
What size is a 4R photo?
4R is 4 × 6 inches (101.6 × 152.4 mm), the most popular photo print: 1200 × 1800 pixels at 300 DPI. 3R is 3.5 × 5 in, 5R is 5 × 7 in and 8R is 8 × 10 in.
Why is my photo cropped at 5 × 7?
A 3:2 photo is longer than the 1.4 shape of 5 × 7, so about 6.7% is trimmed off the long side. Print 4 × 6 for no crop.
