An area converter for homes, farms and land records
This area converter translates a floor or land area between square feet, square metres, acres, hectares, square yards and square miles, and also between the traditional land units still used across India — gaj, cent, guntha, ground, katha, bigha, marla and kanal. Type a figure once and every unit appears together. Below it, a state-wise land unit converter lets you pick the state (or Rajasthan district group) first, because a bigha, katha or marla is not the same size everywhere.
A plot sold in guntha, registered in square metres and taxed per acre has to be converted accurately at every step. Every factor here comes from the exact international foot (0.3048 m), so 1 acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft and 4,046.8564224 m².
How to use the Area Converter
- Enter the area in the Value box, such as 1200 for a 1,200 sq ft flat or 2.5 for two and a half acres.
- Open From and select the unit on your document. Typing “sq ft”, “gaj” or “guntha” filters the list.
- Choose the unit you want in To. The round swap button flips the direction.
- Read the converted area and the formula, adjust Precision if a registry document needs more decimals, and press Copy to paste it.
- Scroll to the list of every area unit to see the same plot in metric, imperial and Indian units at once; tap a row to make it the target.
- For bigha, katha, biswa or marla, use the state-wise converter: choose your state first, then convert either way.

Exact area conversion factors
A square unit is a length unit multiplied by itself, so 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² exactly. An acre was historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day; today it is fixed at 43,560 sq ft (a furlong by a chain). The hectare, a 100 m × 100 m square, is the metric land unit.

| Square kilometre (km²) | 100 hectares | 1,000,000 |
Indian land units by state — with sources
Land measurement in India grew out of local revenue systems, so the same word can mean different sizes in different states and even districts. The main converter keeps one documented value per unit (bigha and katha as in West Bengal); the state-wise converter holds the values below. Where a state publication was found it is linked under the state selector; anything else is marked “confirm locally”. Your land record, the tehsil or the sub-registrar has the final word.
| Unit | Size | Where | Source (checked Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bigha | 27,225, 23,256, 22,500, 17,424 or 16,256 sq ft | Rajasthan, by district (chain × chain) | Land Records Rules 1957, Appendix I |
| Bigha, katha | 14,400 and 720 sq ft (20 katha) | West Bengal | NGDRS survey (NIC) |
| Bigha, katha | 14,400 and 2,880 sq ft (5 katha) | Assam | Statistical Hand Book of Assam (bigha) |
| Kattha, dhur | about 1,361 and 68 sq ft | Bihar, around Patna | Bihar Revenue Glossary |
| Bigha, nali | 6,806.25 and 2,160 sq ft | Uttarakhand | Uttarakhand Academy of Administration |
| Marla, kanal | 272.25 and 5,445 sq ft | Punjab, Haryana | Haryana WEB-HALRIS, Punjab CTP |
| Guntha | 1,089 sq ft (1/40 acre) | Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana | Karnataka Bhoomi records |
| Ground | 2,400 sq ft | Tamil Nadu | TN Survey & Settlement |
| Cent, decimal | 435.6 sq ft (1/100 acre) | South and East India | Definition |

Worked examples
Flat size, sq ft to m². Multiply by 0.09290304. A 1,200 sq ft apartment is 1,200 × 0.09290304 = 111.48 m², the figure you may see in a sale deed.
Farm land, acres to hectares. Multiply by 0.40468564224. A 5-acre farm is 2.023 ha; going the other way, one hectare is 2.471 acres.
Guntha to sq ft. Ten guntha is 10 × 1,089 = 10,890 sq ft — exactly a quarter of an acre, since 40 guntha make one acre.
To work out an area from length and width first, use the area calculator; to convert the side lengths themselves, try the length converter.
