Resize PDF pages to A4, Letter or any paper size
A PDF made in the US is usually US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches); one made almost anywhere else is A4 (210 × 297 mm). Print one on the other’s paper and you get clipped edges, a shrunken page or a printer that refuses to start. The Resize PDF tool changes the page size of a PDF for real, so the file itself is A4, Letter, A3, A5, Legal, Tabloid or your own custom size.
Choose “Scale to fit” to shrink or enlarge the content proportionally onto the new paper, with an optional margin, or “Don’t scale” to keep the content exactly as it is and simply change the sheet around it — for adding white space, centring a small page on a bigger one or trimming a page to a smaller format.
Resizing runs in your browser. Your document is not uploaded, the text stays as real, selectable text, and images are not recompressed.
How to change the page size of a PDF
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click to choose it. The current paper size is shown under the file name.
- Pick the new page size, or “Custom size…” and enter the width and height in mm, inches or points.
- Choose the orientation — “Match each page” keeps landscape pages landscape — and either “Scale to fit” (with an optional margin) or “Don’t scale”.
- Optionally type the pages to resize, then check each page on the preview with the arrows.
- Press “Resize PDF” and download the resized document.
Resize PDF features
Standard and custom sizes
A4, A3, A5, US Letter, US Legal and Tabloid built in, plus any custom size from 13 mm to 5 m per side.
Proportional scaling
Content is scaled by the same amount horizontally and vertically, so nothing is stretched, and centred on the new paper.
Change paper only
Keep the content at 100% and place it in the centre, a corner or along an edge of a larger or smaller page.
Mixed documents handled
Every page is fitted individually, so a file mixing A5, Letter and landscape pages comes out at one consistent size.
Rotation baked in
Pages that were displayed sideways are stored upright at their new size, which avoids surprises in other software.
Vector quality kept
Pages are transformed, not rasterised: text stays searchable, links still work and the file size barely changes.
Paper sizes at a glance
A PDF point is 1/72 inch (about 0.353 mm). A-series sizes follow ISO 216, where each size is half of the one before: two A4 pages make one A3 and an A4 halves into two A5.
| Size | Millimetres | Inches | PDF points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 5.83 × 8.27 | 420 × 595 |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 8.27 × 11.69 | 595 × 842 |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 11.69 × 16.54 | 842 × 1191 |
| US Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 | 8.5 × 11 | 612 × 792 |
| US Legal | 215.9 × 355.6 | 8.5 × 14 | 612 × 1008 |
| Tabloid (Ledger) | 279.4 × 431.8 | 11 × 17 | 792 × 1224 |
Letter to A4 and A4 to Letter: what to expect
A4 is narrower but taller than Letter (8.27 × 11.69 in versus 8.5 × 11 in). Scaling a Letter page to fit A4 shrinks it to about 97% and leaves roughly 13 mm of white space at the top and at the bottom. Going the other way, an A4 page is reduced to about 94% to fit Letter’s shorter height, leaving narrow white bands at the sides. At these percentages body text remains perfectly readable.
If you would rather not scale at all, choose “Don’t scale”. Letter content placed on A4 loses about 3 mm from each side; A4 content on Letter loses about 9 mm from the top and bottom. Check the preview — it warns you whenever part of a page will be cut off.
Resize, crop or compress?
- Resize changes the paper size and moves or scales everything on it, as described here.
- Crop keeps the scale and hides the parts of the page outside a box you draw — use Crop PDF to trim margins or cut out one area.
- Compress reduces the file size in megabytes rather than the paper size — use Compress PDF when an upload portal says the file is too big.
- Pages coming out sideways? Fix them with Rotate PDF before resizing, or choose Portrait or Landscape to force one orientation.
Resize PDF FAQ
How do I change a PDF from Letter to A4?
Add the PDF, keep “A4” as the new page size and “Scale to fit”, then press “Resize PDF”. Each Letter page is scaled to about 97% and centred on an A4 sheet.
Will resizing a PDF reduce its quality?
No. The pages are transformed mathematically rather than turned into images, so text and vector graphics stay sharp at any zoom and photos keep their original resolution.
Can I resize only some pages?
Yes. Type the pages in “Pages to resize”, for example 2-5, 9. All other pages keep their current size.
How do I add white margins around my PDF pages?
Use “Scale to fit” with the same paper size as the original and a margin such as 10 mm. The content shrinks slightly and a white border appears around it.
What happens to links and form fields?
Links and comments are moved and scaled together with the content, so they still sit on the right words. The document’s bookmarks are kept.
Is this PDF resizer free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the PDF is processed in your browser without being uploaded.
