Blank sheet music and tab paper, exactly how you need it

This blank sheet music generator prints manuscript paper for any instrument: a single staff with a treble, bass or alto clef, a grand staff with a brace for piano, six-line guitar tablature, four-line bass tablature, or a treble staff joined to a tab staff for guitar arrangements. Choose how many staves fit on a page, the distance between the lines (2 mm gives the standard 8 mm staff), how many bar lines to draw, and whether each staff carries a clef. A title line and a composer line sit at the top, and page numbers are optional.

Staff lines are drawn in millimetres, so a 2 mm spacing really is 2 mm on paper — the size engravers use for parts — and the PDF is vector, so it stays sharp when photocopied. Everything is generated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Blank Sheet Music Generator

  1. Pick a staff type: treble, bass, alto, plain, grand staff, guitar tab, bass tab or treble + tab.
  2. Set the number of staves per page (10 single staves or 6 grand-staff systems fit comfortably on A4) and the line spacing.
  3. Choose how many bar lines each staff has — 4 is usual for sketching, 0 for free writing — and whether clefs are printed.
  4. Type a title and composer, or leave them blank for ruled lines to fill in by hand; add page numbers for multi-page scores.
  5. Choose paper size and orientation, then Print staff paper or download the PDF or PNG.

Reading the clefs on the page

The treble (G) clef curls around the second line from the bottom, the line for G above middle C. The bass (F) clef starts on the second line from the top and its two dots sit either side of that line, the F below middle C. The alto (C) clef is centred on the middle line, which is middle C; it is the standard clef for viola. On a grand staff the treble and bass staves are joined by a brace and share a system line, and on a treble + tab system a bracket joins the notation staff to the six tab lines, which represent the strings from high E (top) to low E (bottom); fret numbers are written on the lines.

The clefs here are simplified outlines sized to the staff rather than engraved glyphs — clear enough for handwritten music, and you can draw over them if you prefer your own hand. For practising with a steady pulse while you write, keep the metronome open; to check a pitch, use the online tuner.

Printing and binding

  • Print at 100% / Actual size. The PDF has the real page size, so a 2 mm spacing stays 2 mm.
  • For a booklet of manuscript paper, print the PDF double-sided; the PDF N-up tool can also put two A5 pages on one A4 sheet.
  • Black lines at the default 0.18 mm print cleanly on laser and inkjet printers; choose a dark grey if you want pencil marks to stand out.
  • Landscape paper with 6–8 long staves suits lead sheets and chord charts.

Blank Sheet Music Generator FAQ

Can I print blank piano sheet music with a grand staff?

Yes. Choose “Grand staff”. Each system has a treble staff and a bass staff joined by a brace; 5 or 6 systems fit on A4 or Letter at 2 mm spacing.

Is guitar tab paper included?

Yes. “Guitar tab” gives six lines with the TAB mark, “Bass tab” four lines, and “Treble staff + guitar tab” joins a notation staff to a tab staff for each system.

Can I remove the clefs or the bar lines?

Yes. Untick “Clef on every staff” for plain staves, and set bar lines to 0 for unbarred staves.

What line spacing should I use?

2 mm (an 8 mm staff) is the everyday size and matches most printed music; use 1.7–1.8 mm for parts and 2.5–3 mm for children or large print.

Does the PDF keep the clefs as vector shapes?

Yes. Staff lines, clefs, braces and text are drawn as vector paths and text in the PDF, so they print sharply at any size and the file is tiny.

Is the blank sheet music free for teaching?

Yes. Print as many copies as you need; there is no watermark or sign-up, and the page is generated on your own device.
