Convert XLSX to ODS for LibreOffice — properly

This XLSX to ODS converter turns Microsoft Excel workbooks into OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods), the ISO-standard format used by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice and Collabora, and required by many government offices and schools for document exchange. Drop .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb or old .xls files and each becomes an .ods file in seconds.

Rather than a bare data dump, the converter writes a complete OpenDocument package itself: formulas are translated into OpenFormula, Excel number formats become ODF data styles (dates, times, percentages, currencies, red negatives, even Indian lakh/crore grouping), and column widths, row heights, merged cells, hidden rows, columns and sheets, frozen panes, named ranges, filter buttons, comments and links are written out too. A report then lists what was carried over and what the Excel file contained that ODS output from this tool can’t include.

The workbook is read by the open-source SheetJS library and the ODS is assembled with JSZip, all inside your browser — nothing is uploaded.

How to convert Excel to ODS

  1. Drop your Excel workbooks on the upload area or click it to choose them. Each one is listed with its sheets and number of formulas.
  2. Click a workbook and use the tabs to preview its sheets.
  3. Choose whether to keep Formulas or write their values, and whether hidden sheets stay hidden.
  4. Press Convert to ODS. One file downloads directly; several come as a ZIP. Check the report below the download list.

XLSX to ODS Converter features

Formulas in OpenFormula

=SUM(B2:B9)+Data!A1 is written as of:=SUM([.B2:.B9])+[$Data.A1], commas become semicolons outside quoted text, and newer Excel functions such as XLOOKUP get the COM.MICROSOFT. names LibreOffice expects. Each cell also keeps Excel’s last result, so values show before recalculation.

Number formats as ODF styles

Every Excel format code is rebuilt as an OpenDocument data style: date and time parts, [h]:mm durations, percentages, currency, colours and conditional sections — including Indian digit grouping through embedded separators.

Layout carried over

Column widths and row heights, merged ranges, hidden rows, columns and sheets, frozen panes (in settings.xml), named ranges and filter buttons all come across.

A valid package

The mimetype entry is stored first and uncompressed, and the content is well-formed XML, as the ODF standard requires; the selftest re-reads every file it writes.

Told, not surprised

Charts, pictures, VBA macros, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data validation and cell styling are detected in the XLSX and named in the report when they can’t be included.

What the ODS file contains

The limits on the right come from reading Excel files with the open-source SheetJS Community Edition, which doesn’t expose charts or cell styling. For a pixel-perfect copy including charts, open the workbook in LibreOffice and save it as .ods there.

Tips

  • Old .xls and binary .xlsb files can be converted, but their charts and styling can’t be inspected, so the report can’t list them.
  • LibreOffice recalculates formulas when needed; if a newer Excel function is missing in an older LibreOffice version, it shows an error until you update.
  • Indian digit grouping (1,23,45,678.90) is kept through number styles; other locale-specific Excel formats are converted to their fixed form.
  • Going the other way? Use ODS to XLSX. For plain data, XLSX to CSV; for a printable copy, Excel to PDF.

XLSX to ODS Converter FAQ

How do I convert XLSX to ODS?

Drop the Excel file above and press Convert to ODS. The .ods file downloads immediately and opens in LibreOffice Calc, OpenOffice and other OpenDocument apps.

Do formulas still work after converting Excel to ODS?

Yes. Standard formulas are rewritten in OpenFormula syntax with ; separators and keep their calculated values. Formulas that use Excel table references or link to other workbooks are saved as values, and the report says how many.

Are dates and currency formats preserved?

Yes. Excel format codes are converted to OpenDocument data styles, so 15/01/2026, ₹1,500.00, 12.5%, 36:30 and red negative numbers look the same in LibreOffice.

Can I convert old .xls files to ODS?

Yes. .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb and Apple Numbers files are accepted. For .xls and .xlsb the report notes that charts and styling couldn’t be inspected.

Why aren’t my charts in the ODS file?

Charts and cell styling aren’t available to the open-source library used to read Excel files, so they can’t be written. The report lists them; for those, save as .ods from LibreOffice directly.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. Reading and writing happen in your browser, on your device.
