TXT to DOCX Converter

Turn plain text into a formatted Word .docx with real headings, lists, links, fonts and page size.

Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you paste or open is uploaded. the docx library (MIT) is downloaded once from a public CDN.

Convert TXT to DOCX with real Word structure

This TXT to DOCX converter turns plain text — notes from Notepad, a .txt export, text copied from an e-mail or a chat — into a proper Microsoft Word document. Paste the text or open a .txt file, check the page preview, and download an editable .docx that opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, WPS and Pages.

Instead of pouring every line into one long paragraph, the converter works out the structure. Lines wrapped by an editor are joined back into paragraphs, a short title line becomes Heading 1, ALL-CAPS lines and lines starting with # become headings, and lines that begin with -, * or • or with 1. and 2) become real Word bulleted and numbered lists, nested by indentation. Web and e-mail addresses turn into clickable links.

Headings use Word’s built-in Heading styles, so the Navigation pane, automatic tables of contents and accessibility checkers work straight away. The document is built in your browser; the text is never uploaded.

How to use the TXT to DOCX Converter

  1. Paste your text into the box, or press Open .txt file (or drop the file on the box). The encoding is detected and shown above the box.
  2. Choose how paragraphs are formed: blank lines with wrapped lines joined, blank lines with line breaks kept, every line as its own paragraph, or the exact monospaced layout.
  3. Leave heading, list and link detection on, or untick any that misreads your text.
  4. Set the page size, orientation, margins, font, font size and line spacing. The preview follows every change.
  5. Press Download .docx. A summary shows how many paragraphs, headings and links were written.

TXT to DOCX Converter features

Encoding detection

Files saved as UTF-8, UTF-16 (with or without a byte-order mark) or Windows-1252 are recognised automatically, and you can override the guess — Cyrillic, Japanese and Chinese encodings are listed too.

Headings Word understands

Detected headings get the Heading 1–6 styles with outline levels, so they appear in the Navigation pane and in an automatic table of contents.

Native lists

Bullets and numbers are written as Word list numbering, not typed characters, so adding an item renumbers the list. Indented items become sub-levels, and a list that starts at 5 keeps starting at 5.

Page and font settings

A4, US Letter, US Legal or A5, portrait or landscape, four margin presets, nine fonts from Calibri to Courier New, 9–16 pt text and single to double line spacing.

Exact layout mode

Code, logs, ASCII tables and poems keep every space and line break in the Plain Text style with Courier New.

Clickable links

http, https and www addresses and e-mail addresses become Word hyperlinks; a full stop or bracket after an address stays outside the link.

How your text is read

In your textIn the Word document
A short first line followed by a blank lineHeading 1 (the document title)
A line in CAPITAL LETTERS on its ownHeading 2
# Title, ## Section … ###### (Markdown style)Heading 1 to Heading 6
A line underlined with ===== or -----Heading 1 or Heading 2
Lines starting with -, *, + or •Bulleted list; deeper indentation makes a sub-list
Lines starting with 1. or 1)Numbered list starting at that number
Lines with no blank line between themOne paragraph (or line breaks, if you choose)

Which paragraph mode should you pick?

  • Join wrapped lines — for text hard-wrapped at 70–80 characters, such as e-mails, README files and terminal output. Without joining, every line would end early in Word.
  • Keep line breaks — for addresses, poems, song lyrics and short-line lists where each line matters.
  • Every line is a paragraph — for text where each line is a separate thought, such as notes exported from a phone. Blank lines are skipped, because paragraph spacing already separates the lines.
  • Exact layout — for code, logs and text tables that rely on spaces lining up. A monospaced font keeps the columns aligned.

Text, DOCX or PDF?

A .docx is right when someone needs to edit, comment on or restyle the document. If the layout should be fixed and ready to print, use Text to PDF instead. If your text already uses Markdown such as **bold**, links and tables, the Markdown to DOCX converter understands much more of it. To go the other way, DOCX to TXT extracts plain text from Word files.

TXT to DOCX Converter FAQ

How do I convert a TXT file to Word?

Open the .txt file with the button under the text box (or paste its contents), check the preview and press Download .docx. The Word document is ready in a second, with no sign-up or watermark.

Why did my accented letters turn into strange symbols?

The file was probably saved in an older encoding such as Windows-1252 and read as something else. Choose the right one under File encoding and the text is decoded again immediately.

Can it make a .doc file for old Word versions?

It creates .docx, which opens in Word 2007 and every later version, Google Docs and LibreOffice. If you really need .doc, open the .docx in Word and use Save As.

Why did a line become a heading when it shouldn’t?

Short lines in capitals and a short first line are treated as headings. Untick Headings under Detect, or end the line with a full stop.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The document is written in your browser with the open-source docx library (MIT licence), so the text stays on your device.

Does it keep tabs and multiple spaces?

In the normal modes runs of spaces are collapsed, as in any word processor. Choose “Keep exact layout” to keep every space, tab and line in a monospaced font.
