Convert XLSX to CSV without losing sheets, symbols or leading zeros
This XLSX to CSV converter turns Excel workbooks into plain comma-separated text that databases, CRMs, accounting software, Python scripts and bank-upload portals accept. Drop in one or more .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb, LibreOffice .ods or Apple Numbers files, tick the sheets you need, and every sheet becomes its own CSV file — a single sheet downloads straight away, several arrive together in one ZIP.
Excel’s own Save As → CSV writes only the sheet you are looking at, and its plain “CSV” option uses your PC’s legacy code page — which is how ₹, € and Hindi or Tamil text turn into question marks. Here UTF-8 with a byte order mark (BOM) is the default, so Excel reopens the file with every character intact, and you also choose the delimiter, quoting, line endings and how hidden rows, merged cells and formulas are written.
Everything happens inside your browser tab. The workbook is read by the open-source SheetJS library (or this page’s own OpenDocument reader for .ods files) and never leaves your device.
How to convert Excel to CSV
- Drop your workbooks on the upload area or click it to choose them. Each file appears in the list with its type and number of sheets; click a file to show its sheets.
- Under Sheets to convert, tick the sheets you want. Visible sheets with data start ticked, hidden ones unticked. The preview table and the CSV preview show exactly what will be written.
- Pick the Delimiter and Encoding. Keep “UTF-8 with BOM” if the CSV will be opened in Excel; choose “without BOM” for code and most web apps.
- Decide how Values, Merged cells, Hidden rows & columns and Formula cells should be handled, and whether dates should be written as ISO 8601.
- Press Convert to CSV. One CSV downloads directly; two or more come as a ZIP, and each file is also listed with its own download button.
XLSX to CSV Converter features
Every sheet, not just the active one
All sheets of all dropped workbooks are converted in one go, each named after its workbook and sheet, and packed into a ZIP when there is more than one.
Text that survives the round trip
UTF-8 with BOM keeps ₹, £, emoji and Indian scripts readable in Excel. UTF-16 LE suits Excel’s “Unicode text” imports.
What you see or what is stored
“As shown” writes 1,234.50 and 15/01/2026 exactly as displayed. “Raw values” writes 1234.5 at full 15-digit precision for databases and scripts.
Codes keep their zeros
Text cells such as PIN codes, employee IDs and phone numbers (007, 011234) are written character for character.
Merged and hidden cells handled
Write a merged value once, as Excel does, or repeat it in every merged cell. Include hidden rows and columns or leave them out.
Formula-injection guard
Optionally prefix cells starting with =, +, - or @ with an apostrophe so the CSV can’t run formulas when someone opens it.
Which delimiter and encoding should I choose?
Quoting follows RFC 4180, the CSV standard: a field is wrapped in double quotes when it contains the delimiter, a quote or a line break, and quotes inside it are doubled ("" ). “Around all text” and “Around every field” exist for importers that insist on quoted strings.
| Where the CSV is going | Delimiter | Encoding |
|---|---|---|
| Excel in India, the US or the UK | Comma | UTF-8 with BOM |
| Excel in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and other countries that write 1.234,56 | Semicolon | UTF-8 with BOM |
| Python (pandas), R, MySQL / PostgreSQL import, most APIs | Comma | UTF-8 without BOM |
| Text that itself contains many commas, or copy-paste into a spreadsheet | Tab (.tsv) | UTF-8 or UTF-16 LE |
| Legacy systems that expect pipe-separated files | Pipe | Ask the system’s owner — usually UTF-8 |
Dates, numbers and formulas in CSV
A CSV file has no cell types, so every value becomes text. With As shown in the sheet a date formatted as dd/mm/yyyy is written as 15/01/2026 and an amount formatted with Indian digit grouping as 1,23,456.78 — exactly what you see. That is right for people, but a program reading the file may not know which day/month order you meant. Tick Write dates as ISO 8601 to get 2026-01-15 (and 2026-01-15T13:45:00 for date-times), which every database and programming language reads without guessing.
Formula cells are written as the result last calculated and saved in the file; nothing is recalculated here. Choose Formula text to get =SUM(B2:B9) itself. Raw values are rounded to Excel’s 15 significant digits, which drops binary noise such as 0.30000000000000004.
Things to know
- A CSV holds one table. Charts, pictures, colours, fonts, comments and column widths are not part of CSV and are left behind.
- Password-protected workbooks can’t be read — remove the password in Excel first.
- Apple Numbers files are read with SheetJS’s basic Numbers support (the first table on each sheet). If something looks wrong, export from Numbers to Excel first.
- Need the reverse? CSV to XLSX turns CSV files back into a formatted workbook, and Excel to JSON or CSV to JSON produce JSON for code and APIs.
XLSX to CSV Converter FAQ
How do I convert XLSX to CSV with all sheets?
Drop the workbook here, leave every sheet ticked under “Sheets to convert” and press Convert to CSV. Each sheet becomes its own CSV file, and they download together as a ZIP named after the workbook.
Why does my CSV show strange characters like ₹ in Excel?
The file was saved as UTF-8 without a byte order mark, so Excel guessed the old Windows code page. Convert again with “UTF-8 with BOM” — Excel then detects UTF-8 and shows ₹, é and Hindi text correctly.
How do I make a semicolon-separated CSV?
Choose “Semicolon ( ; )” as the delimiter. Use it when the file will be opened in a European version of Excel, where the comma is the decimal separator and Excel expects semicolons between fields.
Will leading zeros like 007 or 011234 be kept?
Yes, when they are stored as text in the workbook, which is how Excel keeps them visible. The CSV contains the characters exactly. Note that Excel itself may strip them again when it reopens a CSV; import the column as Text there.
Are formulas exported to the CSV?
By default you get each formula’s calculated value, as saved in the file. Choose “Formula text” under Formula cells to write the formula itself, such as =SUM(B2:B9).
Is it safe to convert confidential spreadsheets here?
Yes. The workbook is read and converted by JavaScript in your browser; no file is uploaded to any server, and closing the tab discards everything.
