JSON to Excel Converter

Turn JSON into an Excel workbook — nested objects become columns, arrays become their own linked sheets.

Drop JSON files here or click to choose JSON, JSON Lines (.jsonl / .ndjson) · several at once · converted on your device

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

Convert JSON to Excel — even deeply nested JSON

This JSON to Excel converter takes the JSON you get from an API, a database export, a webhook log or a config file and turns it into an .xlsx workbook you can filter, sort and share. Paste the JSON or drop .json and .jsonl files, check the preview, and download a workbook with a bold, frozen header row and filter buttons already in place.

Real-world JSON is rarely a flat list. A customer has an address object, a list of tags and a list of orders, and each order has its own items. Rather than cramming that into one sheet, the converter flattens nested objects into dotted columns such as address.city, and gives every array its own sheet with a link column — orders.id — so each child row can be matched back to its parent, just like tables in a database. If you prefer, arrays can be joined into one cell, spread across numbered columns, or kept as JSON text.

The conversion runs in your browser with the open-source SheetJS library. Your JSON — often full of email addresses, tokens or order data — is never uploaded.

How to convert JSON to Excel

  1. Paste JSON into Or paste JSON and press Add pasted JSON, or drop .json / .jsonl files on the upload area.
  2. Look at the file’s line in the list: it shows how many sheets and rows were found and warns about numbers or text Excel can’t hold exactly.
  3. Choose how Arrays inside records are handled and set the Column order; list key columns under Put these columns first.
  4. Use the tabs above the preview to check every sheet, then press Convert to Excel. Several JSON files download together as a ZIP.

JSON to Excel Converter features

Nested objects → dotted columns

Objects at any depth become columns like customer.address.city. Every key that appears in any record gets a column, so records with different fields still line up.

Arrays → linked sheets

Arrays of objects or values move to their own sheet (orders → orders.items) with a first column holding the parent’s id, uuid, key or code — or its row number when there is no ID.

Several tables at once

An object such as {"customers":[…],"orders":[…]} becomes one sheet per array, plus a sheet for the remaining top-level fields.

Types Excel understands

Numbers and true/false stay numbers and booleans, ISO dates and timestamps become real Excel dates, and strings such as "007" stay text. Optionally turn numeric strings like "42" into numbers.

JSON Lines and grids

Newline-delimited JSON (.jsonl, .ndjson) is read line by line, and an array of arrays becomes rows, with the first row as header when it holds column names.

Honest warnings

Integers longer than 15 digits (Excel rounds them) and text over Excel’s 32,767-character cell limit are counted and reported; syntax errors show the line and column.

How a nested record is laid out

Take {"id":5001,"customer":{"name":"Priya","city":"Mumbai"},"items":[{"sku":"BK-101","qty":1},{"sku":"BK-207","qty":2}]} in an array called orders. With the default settings you get:

SheetColumnsRows
ordersid · customer.name · customer.city5001 · Priya · Mumbai
orders.itemsorders.id · sku · qty5001 · BK-101 · 1 and 5001 · BK-207 · 2

What to watch for

  • Long numbers: JavaScript and Excel keep about 15–17 significant digits, so IDs such as 12345678901234567890 are rounded. Store such IDs as strings in your JSON to keep every digit.
  • Time zones: a timestamp like 2026-01-15T10:30:00Z keeps its clock time (10:30); the zone is dropped because Excel cells have no time zone.
  • Very wide data: “A column per item” can create thousands of columns; Excel stops at 16,384, so use linked sheets for long arrays.
  • Need CSV instead? JSON to CSV produces a single flat file. To go back from a workbook to JSON, use Excel to JSON; to tidy messy JSON first, use the JSON Formatter.

JSON to Excel Converter FAQ

How do I convert a JSON file to Excel?

Drop the .json file above (or paste the JSON), check the preview, and press Convert to Excel. The .xlsx downloads straight away with a bold, frozen header and filter buttons.

How are nested JSON objects converted to Excel columns?

Each nested key becomes a column named with its path, such as address.city or customer.address.pin. Arrays inside records can go to their own linked sheet, be joined into one cell, get one column per item, or stay as JSON text — your choice.

Can one JSON file become several Excel sheets?

Yes. Every top-level array becomes its own sheet, and with “Own sheet, linked by ID” every array inside the records does too. Untick “Each top-level array gets its own sheet” to keep everything in one sheet.

Does it support JSON Lines / NDJSON?

Yes. Files with one JSON object per line (.jsonl, .ndjson, log exports) are detected automatically and each line becomes a row.

Why does a long ID end in 000 in Excel?

Excel stores numbers with 15 significant digits, so longer integers are rounded. The converter warns you when this happens; store such IDs as strings in the JSON to keep them exact.

Is my JSON data uploaded?

No. Parsing, flattening and writing the workbook all happen in your browser; the data never leaves your device.
