A WMA to MP3 converter that runs in your browser
This WMA to MP3 converter rescues music and recordings saved in Windows Media Audio — CDs ripped with Windows Media Player, old music-store downloads, dictation and voice files — and turns them into MP3s that play on phones, cars, Macs and smart speakers. Drop in one file or a whole album, choose a bitrate, and download the MP3s singly or as a ZIP.
No web browser can decode WMA by itself, so this page uses ffmpeg.wasm: FFmpeg, the open-source media engine, compiled to WebAssembly and run unmodified in a separate worker inside your tab. The first conversion downloads it once (32 MB, then cached), FFmpeg decodes the WMA to raw audio, and LAME encodes the MP3 — all on your own computer, with no file sent anywhere.
Before anything is downloaded, the page reads each file’s header itself and shows the WMA version, sample rate, channels, bitrate and length, plus a clear warning for copy-protected files.
How to use the WMA to MP3 Converter
- Drop your .wma files on the box or click it to choose them. You can also add .asf files, or .wmv videos to keep only their sound.
- Check the line under each file: codec (WMA 2, WMA 9 Pro, Lossless or Voice), sample rate, channels, bitrate and length.
- Choose MP3 and a Quality — pick a bitrate at least as high as the WMA’s. 192 kbps is preselected.
- Press Download converter (32 MB) & convert. Later conversions start straight away.
- Play a result to check it, then press Download on each file or Download all (ZIP).
WMA to MP3 Converter features
Every WMA flavour
FFmpeg’s native decoders cover WMA 1, WMA 2 (Windows Media Audio 7, 8 and 9), WMA 9 Professional (including 5.1, mixed down to stereo), WMA 9 Lossless and WMA 9 Voice.
Tags and cover art kept
Title, artist, album, album artist, year, genre, track number, composer, comment and the embedded WM/Picture album art are written into ID3v2 tags.
Header check before downloading
The page parses the ASF header itself, so you see what each file contains — and which ones are DRM-protected — before the converter is fetched.
Batch conversion
Convert dozens of files in one pass and save them as a ZIP.
Other outputs
Choose M4A for Apple devices, FLAC or WAV for lossless archiving (useful for WMA Lossless), or OGG.
Private
Everything happens on your device; the converter and encoders are only program files from a public CDN.
Which WMA do you have?
Windows Media Audio is not one codec but a family stored in Microsoft’s ASF container. The line under each file tells you which one, and that tells you what to pick as output.
| Shown as | What it is | Suggested output |
|---|---|---|
| WMA 2 (Windows Media Audio 7/8/9) | The standard lossy codec; most .wma files, 64–192 kbps | MP3 at the same bitrate or a step higher |
| WMA 1 | The original 1999 version | MP3 128 kbps |
| WMA 9 Professional | Higher quality, up to 24-bit and 5.1 surround | MP3 256–320 kbps or FLAC |
| WMA 9 Lossless | Bit-exact compression of a CD or master | FLAC (stays lossless) or MP3 320 kbps |
| WMA 9 Voice | Low-bitrate speech codec | MP3 64 kbps |
Protected (DRM) WMA files
Songs bought from some music stores and subscription services in the 2000s were locked with Windows Media DRM, which ties playback to a licence on the original computer. The audio inside is encrypted, so no converter can turn it into MP3 without that licence, and this page does not try. If a file is protected, its line says so and the other files still convert. Check whether the store offers a DRM-free download, or use an unprotected copy you own, such as your own CD.
Tips for the best quality
- Converting from one lossy format to another always loses a little detail. Never pick a lower bitrate than the WMA has, and choose 320 kbps for anything you care about.
- WMA 9 Lossless files are perfect copies: convert them to FLAC to keep that, then make MP3s from the FLAC whenever you need them.
- Very long files (several hours) need a lot of memory; split them first with the Split Audio tool after converting a short test.
- Check the tags of the new files in the Audio Metadata Viewer, or edit them with the ID3 Tag Editor.
WMA to MP3 Converter FAQ
How do I convert WMA to MP3 for free?
Drop the WMA files on this page, keep MP3 selected, press Download converter (32 MB) & convert and then Download. There is no sign-up, watermark or limit on the number of files.
Why does it download 32 MB?
Browsers have no WMA decoder, so the page fetches FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It is downloaded once from a public CDN and cached by your browser; your files never leave your computer.
Is WMA better quality than MP3?
WMA 2 was designed to beat MP3 at low bitrates such as 64 kbps; from about 128 kbps up the two sound much the same. Converting WMA to MP3 cannot add quality, so pick a bitrate at least as high as the original.
Can it convert DRM-protected WMA?
No. Protected files are encrypted and need the original licence to play. The page detects them and tells you, rather than producing a broken file.
Will the album art and track names be kept?
Yes, when converting to MP3: the title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, comment and embedded cover picture are copied into ID3 tags.
Does it work on a phone?
It is built for current browsers on computers and Android phones. On iPhone and iPad, memory limits can stop very long files, and every file converts faster on a computer.
Can I get just the sound from a WMV video?
Yes. Add the .wmv file and the first audio track is converted to MP3; the video is ignored.
