Convert M4A to MP3 — voice memos, songs and more
This M4A to MP3 converter turns .m4a files into MP3s that any device, app or upload form accepts. M4A is the audio-only flavour of MP4 used by iPhone Voice Memos, DRM-free iTunes Store purchases, GarageBand exports and many Android recorders. MP3 remains the most compatible audio format in the world, so converting removes the “unsupported file” message on old players, car stereos, Windows apps and websites.
The conversion runs in your browser with no upload: recordings of meetings, lessons or family moments stay on your device. Tags written by iTunes or the Music app — title, artist, album, track number and artwork — are copied into the MP3’s ID3 tag.
How to use the M4A to MP3 Converter
- Drop your .m4a files on the upload area. On an iPhone, share the voice memo to Files first, then pick it here.
- Choose a Bitrate (constant). 192 kbps (selected) suits music; voice memos sound fine at 96 or 128 kbps.
- For recordings of a single voice, set Channels to Mono to make the MP3 smaller at the same clarity.
- Press Convert to MP3.
- Listen to the MP3 and download it, or use Download all (ZIP) for several files.
M4A to MP3 Converter features
AAC in, MP3 out
Decodes AAC from .m4a, .m4b and .mp4 files and encodes constant-bitrate MP3 with LAME.
Voice-memo friendly
Mono output and low bitrates keep speech recordings small; the file list shows each memo’s length so you can find the right one.
iTunes tags kept
MP4 metadata atoms (©nam, ©ART, ©alb, trkn, covr…) are mapped to ID3v2 frames, including the artwork.
Honest about ALAC
Apple Lossless .m4a files are detected; browsers that can’t decode ALAC say so instead of producing a broken MP3.
Batch conversion
Convert a whole album or a month of memos in one go and download them as a ZIP.
What’s inside an M4A file?
M4A is not a codec but a container: an MPEG-4 file, the same family as .mp4, holding only audio. Almost always that audio is AAC, a lossy codec; occasionally it is ALAC, Apple’s lossless codec. The .m4a extension was Apple’s way of telling apps “audio only” — .m4b marks audiobooks and .m4r iPhone ringtones, but the structure is the same.
Because the AAC has to be decoded and re-encoded as MP3, the conversion is lossy. Pick an MP3 bitrate at least equal to the M4A’s, shown in the file list, and the difference is very hard to hear.
Recommended settings
Mono halves the amount of audio the MP3 has to describe, so a mono MP3 sounds cleaner than a stereo one at the same bitrate — ideal for a single voice.
| Source | Typical M4A | MP3 setting |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Voice Memos | AAC, usually mono, low bitrate | Mono · 96 kbps |
| iTunes Store song | AAC, stereo, 256 kbps | Stereo · 256 or 320 kbps |
| GarageBand or app export | AAC, stereo, 128–256 kbps | Stereo · 192–320 kbps |
| Podcast or audiobook (.m4b) | AAC, 64–128 kbps | Mono or stereo · 96–128 kbps |
Files that won’t convert
- .m4p files are DRM-protected iTunes purchases, mostly from before 2009, and can’t be decoded by browsers. Songs downloaded with a streaming subscription are protected too.
- Apple Lossless (ALAC) files decode only in browsers with an ALAC decoder, such as Safari on Mac and iPhone; Chrome, Edge and Firefox report them as unsupported.
- Very long recordings are processed in your device’s memory; a multi-hour lecture works on a computer but may be too much for an older phone.
- To trim a memo before sharing it, use the Audio Cutter; to record a new one, the Voice Recorder; to go the other way, MP3 to M4A.
M4A to MP3 Converter FAQ
How do I convert M4A to MP3?
Drop the .m4a file on this page and press Convert to MP3. The MP3 downloads automatically, and you can convert several at once.
How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?
In Voice Memos, tap the recording, choose Share → Save to Files, then open this page in Safari, tap the upload area and pick the file. Choose Mono and 96 kbps for a small, clear MP3.
Does M4A to MP3 lose quality?
Slightly, because both are lossy formats. Matching or exceeding the M4A’s bitrate keeps the difference very hard to hear.
Is M4A better than MP3?
At the same bitrate the AAC inside an M4A usually sounds a little better than MP3. MP3’s advantage is compatibility: everything plays it.
Can I convert iTunes or Apple Music songs?
DRM-free iTunes Store purchases, yes. Songs downloaded through a music streaming subscription are DRM-protected and can’t be converted.
Are my recordings uploaded?
No. The M4A is decoded and the MP3 encoded inside your browser, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
