An online ID3 tag editor for single songs and whole albums
Wrong song titles, “Unknown Artist”, tracks sorted in the wrong order or a missing album cover — almost always the tags are to blame. This free ID3 tag editor lets you fix them in your browser: title, artist, album, album artist, track and disc numbers, year, genre, composer, comment, lyrics and the embedded cover picture.
It handles more than MP3. The same form edits M4A and other MP4 audio, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, Opus and WAV files, and you can select a whole album to change shared fields in one go or fill titles and track numbers from the file names. Only the tag blocks are rewritten; the compressed audio is copied byte for byte, and every saved file is read back to prove it.
How to use the ID3 Tag Editor
- Drop one or more audio files onto the box. All files start out selected.
- Tick the files you want to change. With several files selected, fields that differ show “several values” and stay untouched unless you type in them.
- Edit the fields. Use “Choose cover” or drop an image on the square to add or replace the artwork, or “Remove cover” to delete it.
- Optional: open “Fill tags from file names” and enter a pattern such as %track% - %artist% - %title% to read values from the names of the selected files.
- Press “Save changes”. Each file is written, re-read and checked; then download a single file or all edited files as a ZIP.
ID3 Tag Editor features
No re-encoding
Tags are rewritten at the byte level — ID3 frames, MP4 atoms with chunk-offset fix-ups, FLAC metadata blocks and Ogg pages with fresh checksums — so the sound is bit-for-bit the same.
Keeps what you don’t touch
Frames the form does not show, such as ReplayGain, MusicBrainz IDs, sort orders and chapters, are carried over exactly as they were.
Batch editing
Set the album, album artist, genre, year or total tracks for a whole album at once, while each song keeps its own title and number.
File-name patterns
Turn names like “03 - Artist - Song.mp3” into tags with placeholders for title, artist, album, track, disc, year and more.
Cover art
Add, replace or remove the front cover; WebP, GIF and BMP images are converted to JPEG because players expect JPEG or PNG.
Verified saves
Every file is parsed again by this editor and by the independent music-metadata library (MIT), and its audio bytes are compared with a SHA-256 hash.
Which tags are written for each format
| Format | Written as | Details |
|---|---|---|
| MP3, AAC (ADTS) | ID3v2.3, or ID3v2.4 if the file already uses it | An existing ID3v1 or APEv2 tag is updated too, so every player shows the same values |
| M4A, M4B, MP4 | iTunes metadata atoms (ilst) | Track/disc as numbers, cover as JPEG or PNG atom |
| FLAC | Vorbis comments + PICTURE blocks | A non-standard ID3 tag at the start is removed and its values are copied over |
| OGG Vorbis, Opus | Vorbis comments | Covers use METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE; pages are renumbered with new CRCs |
| WAV | ID3 chunk + RIFF LIST INFO | INFO is what Windows shows; the ID3 chunk carries Unicode and the cover |
Tips for clean tags
- Give every song of an album the same Album and Album artist — players group albums by these two fields, so a featured artist in the Artist field won’t split the album.
- Fill in the total number of tracks and discs; phones and car systems sort more reliably with “4 of 12” than with “4”.
- ID3v2.3 stores only the year. If you need the full release date, it is kept in ID3v2.4, FLAC, OGG and M4A tags.
- Square covers between 600 and 1,400 pixels look sharp everywhere without bloating each file. Add Album Art can crop and resize a picture before embedding it, and the Album Art Downloader finds artwork for an album.
- If your files are full of website names or ALL-CAPS titles, run them through the MP3 Tag Cleaner first, then fine-tune here. To double-check the result, open a file in the Audio Metadata Viewer.
ID3 Tag Editor FAQ
How do I edit the tags of an MP3 file?
Drop the MP3 into this ID3 tag editor, change the fields you want and press “Save changes”. Download the edited file and replace the original — the sound is untouched, only the tags differ.
Can I change the album cover of a song?
Yes. Click “Choose cover” or drop a JPG or PNG onto the cover square, then save. “Remove cover” deletes the embedded artwork instead.
How do I edit many songs at once?
Drop all the files, keep them selected and type in the fields that should be the same for every song, such as album or genre. Fields you leave alone keep each file’s own value.
Will editing tags reduce the audio quality?
No. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded. The tag area of the file is rebuilt around the original audio data, which is checked byte for byte after saving.
Why does Windows still show the old title?
Windows and some players cache tags. Replace the old file with the downloaded one, then refresh the folder or rescan your library. For WAV files Windows reads the RIFF INFO block, which this editor updates too.
Are my music files uploaded?
No. The files are read and written by JavaScript in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
