Tamil typing online from English letters
This Tamil typing online tool turns English letters into Tamil script as you type: write vanakkam! neenga eppadi irukkeenga? and get வணக்கம்! நீங்க எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?. It is built for Tanglish, the way people already write Tamil in English letters, so you can type a message, a caption, a letter or homework without installing a Tamil keyboard.
Tamil is not Devanagari shifted to another block. It has no separate letters for aspirated or voiced sounds, it has three n letters (ந ன ண), three l letters (ல ள ழ) and two r letters (ர ற), and it never stacks consonants: every consonant without a vowel takes a pulli (்). This keyboard uses its own Tamil table and rules for all of that instead of reusing a Hindi layout.
It changes the script, not the language: English words are written in Tamil letters, not translated.
How to use the Tamil Typing
- Type Tamil words in English letters in the left box; the Tamil text appears on the right as you type.
- Look at the strip under the box. It offers the other n, l and r letters and long or short vowels for the word you are typing; click one to replace the word.
- Use the Tamil letters palette for anything else, such as ஃ, ஞ or a grantha letter.
- Pick Type in place to turn each word into Tamil in the same box when you press space.
- Press Copy Tamil or Download .txt to use the Unicode Tamil anywhere.

How Tanglish becomes Tamil
Each group of English letters is matched against the Tamil table, longest group first. A consonant followed by a vowel takes the vowel sign (கா, கி, கு, கெ, கை, கொ); a consonant with no vowel after it takes the pulli, which is how Tamil writes clusters (க்க, ந்த) and word endings (தமிழ், கடல்). Short e and o give எ/ஒ, and capital E/O (or ae/oa) give the long ஏ/ஓ; ee and oo give ஈ and ஊ, as Tanglish usually spells them.
Because Tanglish spells several Tamil letters the same way, every word comes with alternatives: vanakam can be வனகம் or வணகம், pal can be பல் or பள் or பழ். The suggestion strip shows them in a click.

Limits worth knowing
- There is no dictionary: the tool cannot know that padikkiren is written with ற (படிக்கிறேன்) unless you pick it. Common words are covered by the table.
- Grantha letters (ஜ ஷ ஸ ஹ க்ஷ ஸ்ரீ) are on
j,sh,S,h,kshandsri; use plain letters if you prefer pure Tamil spelling. - Tamil numerals (௧ ௨ ௩) are rarely used today, so digits stay as 0–9.
- For Telugu or Bengali use Telugu typing or Bengali typing; to practise speed afterwards, the typing speed test.
Tamil Typing FAQ
How do I type Tamil using an English keyboard?
Type the words as you would in Tanglish, for example naan tamil pesuven, and the tool writes நான் தமிழ் பேசுவேன். Click a suggestion when you need a different n, l or r.
How do I type ழ, ள, ண and ற?
Type zh for ழ, L for ள, N for ண and R for ற. They are also in the palette.
Why does n sometimes give ந and sometimes ன?
Tamil writes ந at the start of a word and before த, and ன in most other places. The tool follows that rule; the suggestion strip has the other forms.
Is this Tamil translation?
No. It is English to Tamil typing: the letters change, not the language. Use a translator for meaning.
Will the Tamil text work in WhatsApp or Word?
Yes. The output is standard Unicode Tamil, which every modern phone and computer displays.
Is my text private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
