Plan a road trip day by day
This road trip planner with stops takes the places you want to drive through, gets the road distance and driving time of every leg, and splits the trip into days by the most hours — or kilometres — you want to drive in a day. It shows where each night falls, when each day ends with breaks and sightseeing stops, where you must fill up, and what the whole trip costs in fuel, tolls, hotels and daily spending, in total and per person.
It works as a road trip cost calculator for India (km, km per litre and rupees, with 195 Indian cities built in) and anywhere else in miles and US gallons. Road distances come from Valhalla, an open-source routing engine, on OpenStreetMap data via a free public server — no sign-up, no key, and nothing is sent until you press the button.
How to use the Road Trip Planner
- Type your places one per line in driving order: a city, an address, or “name, latitude, longitude”.
- Press Get road distances. Until then the plan uses straight lines times a detour factor, marked as an estimate.
- Set the most hours (and, if you like, kilometres) to drive in a day, when you set off, your breaks and the time at each stop.
- Choose whether nights should fall at places on your list when possible, or wherever the daily limit is reached.
- Enter fuel economy, tank, reserve and your fuel price, plus tolls, the cost of a night and daily spending. Copy the plan or download a CSV.
Road Trip Planner features
Days from your limits
Driving hours and an optional distance cap per day decide each day’s end.
Overnight stops
Prefers your listed towns; a leg longer than a day is split and the overnight point is shown on the map.
Fuel stops
The latest point to fill up on each tank, keeping your reserve — the method of the fuel stop planner.
Trip cost
Fuel, tolls, stays and daily costs, in total and per person, in your currency.
Fair use of free servers
Requests only on the button, grouped legs, one per second and cached.
How the days, stops and costs are worked out
Each leg’s length and free-flow driving time come from the router; if you enter an average speed, time is distance ÷ speed instead. The planner then drives leg by leg. A day ends when the next leg would break your hours or distance limit; with “at a place on my list”, the night falls at the last place reached, unless the next leg is longer than a whole day — then the day ends wherever the limit falls, and that point is shown as coordinates so you can look for a town nearby. Breaks are added after each full block of driving (15 minutes every 2 hours by default), and the time at each stop on the way is added to the clock but not to the driving hours.
Fuel uses the same definitions as the fuel stop planner: usable range = tank × (100% − reserve) × distance per litre; the first stop comes after the range of the fuel you set off with. Fuel needed = total distance ÷ economy, and its cost = litres × your price, as in the fuel cost calculator. Nights = days − 1.
Example: Delhi → Agra → Jaipur → Udaipur → Ahmedabad → Mumbai is about 1,682 km by road and 37 h 19 min of free-flow driving (computed 24 Oct 2026). At 8 hours a day it takes 6 days; the night after Jaipur falls on the road to Udaipur. At 15 km/L, a 45-litre tank with 15% reserve covers about 574 km, so two fuel stops are needed and the trip uses about 112 litres.
Limits and estimates
- Times assume free-flowing traffic: no jams, roadworks, border queues or ghat-road delays. Use your own average speed for busy routes.
- The free FOSSGIS server accepts car routes up to 1,500 km in a straight line per request. Legs are grouped to stay under it; a single leg longer than that is a clearly marked estimate (straight line × 1.3). Ballou, Rahardja and Sakai (2002) found average road-to-straight-line ratios near 1.2 in the US and 1.3 in India.
- Fuel stops are the latest points by range — fill up earlier where stations are sparse. Tolls are your own estimate; the route only says whether it uses toll roads.
- To find the best order for many stops, use the multi-stop route planner first; for an electric car, the EV road trip planner.
Road Trip Planner FAQ
How many days will my road trip take?
Divide the total driving time by the hours you are happy to drive a day and round up — this planner does it leg by leg, so nights can fall at towns on your list.
How many hours should I drive a day?
Many travellers keep to 6–8 hours with a short break every 2 hours; the UK Highway Code advises at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving.
How do I calculate road trip gas cost?
Fuel = distance ÷ fuel economy; cost = fuel × price. For 1,682 km at 15 km/L and ₹95 a litre, that is about 112 litres, or about ₹10,651.
Does it find petrol stations?
No. It shows how far you can go on each tank, keeping your reserve; check a maps app for stations near those points.
Is it free and private?
Yes. Everything is worked out in your browser. Only the stop coordinates go to the routing server, and only when you press the button.
Can I plan a road trip in India with it?
Yes. Use km and km per litre, ₹ prices, and pick from 195 Indian cities or type any address.
