Rabbit age calculator: how old is my rabbit in human years?
This rabbit age calculator converts your rabbit’s age into an approximate human age and tells you which life stage it is in — baby, young, adolescent, adult, senior or elderly. Enter its age in years and months, or its date of birth, and you get a human-years figure, a rabbit age chart and a curve showing where your rabbit sits.
Be clear about what the number is: there is no official or scientific formula for rabbit years. The figures you see on pet sites (“21 at one year, then 6 a year”) have no published veterinary source. This calculator instead matches the stages of a rabbit’s life, as the RSPCA describes them, to the equivalent stages of a human life. The popular rule is shown alongside for comparison.
Because rabbits of different sizes live for different lengths of time, you can set the expected lifespan — 10 years by default, the middle of the RSPCA’s typical 8 to 12.
How to use the Rabbit Age Calculator
- Choose whether you know your rabbit’s age or its date of birth.
- Enter years and months, or the date of birth.
- Adjust the expected lifespan if your rabbit is a giant or a long-lived small breed.
- Read the approximate human years, the life stage and when your rabbit counts as senior.
- Use the rabbit age chart and the curve to compare other ages.

How the conversion works
Between the anchors the calculator draws straight lines. Rabbit timeline: RSPCA, “Rabbits” (rspca.org.uk, checked October 2026). The human ages are this tool’s chosen equivalents for those milestones. Example: a 3-year-old rabbit with a 10-year lifespan is 21 + (2 ÷ 5.25) × 39 ≈ 36 human years; the popular rule says 21 + 2 × 6 = 33.
| Rabbit milestone (RSPCA) | Rabbit age used | Matched human age |
|---|---|---|
| Puberty begins (3–5 months) | 4 months | 12 |
| Fully mature (7–9 months) | 8 months | 18 |
| First birthday | 1 year | 21 |
| Becomes senior (5–8 years) | 0.625 × lifespan (6.25 years at 10) | 60 |
| Typical lifespan (8–12 years) | your setting (10) | 80 |
How long do rabbits live?
The RSPCA says pet rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years, and some live longer; it puts the start of old age at 5 to 8 years. Size matters: PDSA’s breed profiles give average lifespans of 6–9 years for the Dutch and 5–8 years for the British Giant. Neutering, a hay-based diet, space to exercise and a rabbit companion all help.
Wild rabbits face predators, disease and harsh weather, and most live far shorter lives than pets, so a chart for pet rabbits does not describe wild ones.
How to tell a rabbit’s age
If you adopted an adult rabbit, its exact age may be unknown. Vets estimate age from size, the state of the teeth and claws, coat condition, and whether the growth plates have closed. Young rabbits are lean and bouncy; older rabbits may be stiffer, sleep more and develop dental or joint problems. Use the age your vet or rescue estimated.
