Convert cat years to human years the way vets do
Cats grow up astonishingly fast: by their first birthday they are about as mature as a 15-year-old person, and by two they are roughly 24. After that, each cat year adds about four human years. This cat age calculator uses the age chart from the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines — written by the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners — to turn your cat’s age into human years and to tell you which life stage it is in.
Enter your cat’s age in years and months, or its birth date. You get the human-equivalent age, the life stage (kitten, young adult, mature adult or senior), how long until the next stage, a care tip for that stage, an interactive chart with the stages shaded and the full conversion table.
The result is an informative estimate, not veterinary advice; every cat ages differently.
How to use the Cat Age Calculator
- Type your cat’s age in years and add months — or choose a birth date and both are filled in.
- Read the human-equivalent age and the life stage in the result.
- Check Years to the next stage and the care tip below the numbers.
- Move your pointer or finger along the chart to read any age, or scroll the table, where your cat’s row is highlighted.
Cat Age Calculator features

How the conversion works
The chart rises steeply in the first two years — 15 human years for the first, 9 for the second — because kittens reach physical and sexual maturity within months. From age 2 the line is straight: human age ≈ 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2). So a 9-year-old cat is about 24 + 4 × 7 = 52. Between the published early points (1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months) the calculator draws straight lines. Beyond 25 years, the oldest age on the chart, it simply continues at four years per year.
The old “multiply by seven” rule is shown for comparison only: it makes a one-year-old cat a seven-year-old child, when in fact it is already an adolescent, and it overstates the age of older cats.
What each life stage means
- Kitten (birth to 1 year): rapid growth, vaccinations, parasite control and neutering.
- Young adult (1–6 years): peak fitness; keep weight and dental health in check.
- Mature adult (7–10 years): roughly the equivalent of people in their mid-40s to mid-50s; early signs of disease are easy to miss.
- Senior (over 10 years): more frequent check-ups are usually recommended, with attention to kidneys, thyroid, blood pressure, joints and weight. Many indoor cats now live into their late teens.
Cat Age Calculator FAQ
How old is my cat in human years?
Enter its age in the cat age calculator. As a rule of thumb: 1 year ≈ 15, 2 years ≈ 24, then add 4 for every year after that — so a 10-year-old cat is about 56.
When is a cat considered senior?
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines call cats over 10 years old seniors. Mature adulthood runs from 7 to 10.
How do I work out a kitten’s age in human years?
Enter 0 years and the months. A 3-month-old kitten is about 4 in human years and a 6-month-old about 10.
Is the 7× rule right for cats?
No. It understates how quickly kittens mature and overstates the age of older cats. The vets’ chart is more realistic.
How long do cats live?
It varies a great deal with genetics, health and whether a cat lives indoors; many cats now reach their mid to late teens and some live past 20. The calculator does not predict lifespan.
Is there a version for dogs?
Yes — the dog age calculator adjusts for size, because large dogs age faster. Use the date difference calculator to count days since adoption.
