Ask your vet — this is general information, not veterinary advice. Breed standards describe show dogs; many healthy pets are lighter or heavier. Body condition — how your dog looks and feels — matters more than the number on the scale. Your vet can score it properly and set a target weight.

Dog weight chart: breed standards, growth by age and body condition

How much should my dog weigh? This dog weight chart answers it three ways. First, a searchable table of 78 popular breeds with the male and female weights in their breed standards, in kg or lb. Second, for any breed, the typical weight at each age from two months to adulthood. Third, a body condition check, because a number on the scale means little without knowing how much of it is fat.

Breed weights come from the American Kennel Club’s breed pages, which state each standard’s weight (and for the Cane Corso, the FCI standard). The weight-by-age table uses growth data from almost a million dogs. The body condition descriptions follow the widely used 9-point scale, written in plain words.

Use it to see whether your dog is in the expected range and to spot a trend, not to diagnose. Many healthy dogs, especially pets and mixed breeds, sit outside show standards.

How to use the Dog Weight Chart by Breed

  1. Type a breed into Find a breed or filter by size; switch between kg and lb at any time.
  2. Tap a breed name to see its male and female range bars, life span and typical weight by age.
  3. Under Check your dog, enter your dog’s weight and sex.
  4. Choose the body condition score that matches what you see and feel — the description updates as you choose.
  5. Read whether your dog is within the breed standard and, if the score is 6 or more, an estimated ideal weight.

Body condition score: the number that matters most

Vets score body condition from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese) by looking at the waist from above and the belly from the side, and by feeling the ribs. A 4 or 5 is ideal: you can feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist behind them.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) uses a simple rule: each point above 5 means roughly 10% extra body weight, so a dog scoring 7 is about 20% heavy. Example: a 40 kg male Labrador with a score of 7 → 40 ÷ 1.2 ≈ 33 kg ideal, comfortably inside the 29–36 kg standard. Scores of 3 or below need a vet visit.

Weight by age: how the table is built

Puppies of different sizes grow at different speeds: a toy breed is about half its adult weight at 16 weeks, a giant breed about a third. The age table multiplies the middle of the breed standard by the median fraction of adult weight at each age, taken from the open data behind Salt et al., PLoS ONE 2017 (growth standards for dogs). For an individual puppy, the puppy weight calculator works from its actual weight instead.

Dog Weight Chart by Breed FAQ

How do I read the dog weight chart for a male dog?

Find the breed and read the Male column, or tap the breed for range bars. Males of most large breeds are about 15–30% heavier than females; small breeds often share one range.

My dog is above the chart. Is it overweight?

Not necessarily. Check body condition: if you can feel the ribs easily and see a waist, a big-boned dog may simply be large for its breed. If the score is 6 or more, talk to your vet about a target.

What about mixed breeds and Indian street dogs?

Breed charts do not fit them well. Use body condition instead, and the dog food calculator to feed for the ideal weight your vet suggests.

Why is my breed missing?

The chart covers 78 popular breeds whose standards state a weight. Some standards (for example, those judged only by height) give none.

How old is my dog in human years?

That depends on size too — the dog age calculator converts by size class.
