Convert PDF to PNG without losing quality
The PDF to PNG converter turns each page of a PDF into a PNG image. PNG is a lossless format, so the sharp edges of text, thin table rules, charts and diagrams come out exactly as the page renders, with none of the smudgy halos that JPEG compression leaves around letters. Choose a resolution, pick the pages you need, and save each PNG on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
It also offers something many converters leave out: a transparent background. Switch it on and the parts of the page that nothing is painted on stay see-through. That is exactly what you want when you are lifting a logo, a signature, a stamp or a chart out of a PDF to drop onto a coloured slide, a website or a design in Canva or Figma.
Pages are drawn by pdf.js, the open-source PDF engine built into Firefox, running inside your own browser tab. Your PDF is never uploaded, so contracts, payslips and medical reports stay on your computer or phone.
How to convert a PDF to PNG
- Drop a PDF onto the box above, or click it to pick a file from your computer, phone or cloud drive.
- Choose a resolution: 72 DPI for previews, 150 DPI for slides and documents, 300 DPI for print — or “Custom DPI…” for any value from 36 to 600. The hint underneath shows the pixel size of page 1.
- Type the pages you want in “Pages”, for example
2, 5-7, or leave it empty to convert every page. - Tick “Transparent background” if you want see-through PNGs instead of a white page.
- Press “Convert to PNG”. Open any thumbnail at full size, download pages one by one, or press “Download all (ZIP)”.
PDF to PNG features
Lossless pages
Every pixel pdf.js draws is stored exactly. PNG’s DEFLATE compression never blurs small print or adds colour noise to flat areas.
Transparent background
The page is rendered without its usual white fill, so empty areas get zero opacity while anti-aliased edges keep their soft, partial transparency.
36 to 600 DPI
Three presets plus a custom value. The pixel size of the first page updates as you change the setting, so you know what you will get before converting.
Pick exact pages
Single pages, ranges and open-ended ranges such as “10-” mean you don’t have to convert a 200-page manual to get one diagram.
Safe with very large pages
Posters and engineering drawings are capped at about 16 megapixels so phones don’t run out of memory; the real DPI is printed under each image.
PNG, JPG or WebP for PDF pages?
All three are fine for viewing a page; they differ in how they compress it. PNG is the safe choice whenever the page is mostly text, lines or flat colour.
| PNG | JPG | WebP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy | Lossy (quality slider) |
| Text and line art | Pin-sharp | Soft halos at low quality | Good at 80% and above |
| Scanned photos | Very large files | Small files | Smallest files |
| Transparency | Yes (full alpha) | No | Yes |
| Opens everywhere | Yes | Yes | Modern browsers and apps |
How the transparent background works — and when it can’t
A PDF page has no background colour of its own. PDF readers paint a white sheet first and then draw the page contents on top. With the option on, this tool skips that white sheet, so only the marks the PDF actually contains — text, shapes, images — end up opaque in the PNG.
That only helps if the PDF itself leaves the background empty. Scanned documents are a single full-page photo, many Word and PowerPoint exports paint a white or coloured rectangle behind everything, and flattened images inside a PDF keep their own background. Those pages stay opaque, and no converter can invent transparency that isn’t in the file. For a logo or signature, convert with the option on, then trim the empty space with Crop Image.
Pixel sizes you can expect
The image size is the page size in inches multiplied by the DPI. Results can differ by one pixel because PDF files round page sizes slightly differently.
| Page size | 72 DPI | 150 DPI | 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 (210 × 297 mm) | 595 × 842 | 1240 × 1754 | 2480 × 3508 |
| US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) | 612 × 792 | 1275 × 1650 | 2550 × 3300 |
| US Legal (8.5 × 14 in) | 612 × 1008 | 1275 × 2100 | 2550 × 4200 |
PDF to PNG FAQ
How do I convert a PDF to PNG for free?
Drop the PDF above, choose a resolution and press “Convert to PNG”. Download the pages individually or as one ZIP. There is no sign-up, watermark or page limit.
Can I convert a PDF to PNG with a transparent background?
Yes. Tick “Transparent background” before converting. Areas where the PDF paints nothing become fully transparent. Scans and pages with a painted white background remain opaque because the background is part of the file.
What DPI should I choose?
150 DPI suits screens, slides and documents. Use 300 DPI for printing, OCR or zooming into fine print. 72 DPI is enough for thumbnails and quick previews.
Why are my PNG files bigger than JPGs?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which costs space on photo-heavy or scanned pages. For those, PDF to JPG gives much smaller files; you can also shrink the PNGs afterwards with the Image Compressor.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened and rendered by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears everything.
Can I turn PNG images back into a PDF?
Yes — PNG to PDF combines PNG files into one document, keeping them lossless and handling transparency correctly.
