Count the pages in one PDF or hundreds
Need to know how many pages are in a stack of PDFs — to quote a printing job, check a submission limit, bill for translation or plan a scanning project? The PDF Page Counter counts pages in as many PDF files as you drop on it and adds them up for you.
Each file gets its own row with the page count, file size, PDF version and whether it is encrypted. The total number of pages, the number of files and the average length appear at the top, and the whole list can be copied into a spreadsheet or saved as a CSV file.
Counting happens on your own device. The files are read by your browser and never uploaded, so contracts, invoices and student papers stay private.
How to use the PDF Page Counter
- Drop PDF files onto the upload area, or click it and select several files at once (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A selects a whole folder’s contents).
- Watch the counts fill in — four files are processed at a time and the progress bar shows how many are left.
- Read the total pages, number of files and average pages per file at the top.
- Click a column heading to sort by name, pages or size, and use the × button to remove a file you added by mistake.
- Press “Download CSV” or “Copy table” to take the results into Excel, Google Sheets or an email.
PDF Page Counter features
Bulk counting
Add hundreds of PDFs in one go, and keep adding more — the totals update as each file is counted.
Fast and lightweight
Only the document’s page tree is read, not every page, so even large files are counted in a moment.
Encryption detected
Encrypted files are flagged. If a password is required, the count is read from the unencrypted page tree where possible and marked with an asterisk.
Duplicate-safe
Dropping the same file twice is ignored, so totals are never double-counted.
Spreadsheet-ready export
Download a CSV with file names, pages, sizes, versions and notes, plus a total row.
Nothing uploaded
All parsing happens in your browser; there are no servers involved and no file-size quota.
Common reasons to count PDF pages
- Printing quotes: print shops in India, the US and the UK usually price per page or per sheet, so a total page count gives an instant estimate — remember that double-sided printing needs half as many sheets.
- Translation and transcription: agencies often quote per page before counting words.
- Submission limits: theses, grant applications and court filings frequently cap the number of pages.
- Archiving and scanning: checking that every scanned batch has the expected number of pages catches skipped sheets.
- Merging documents: know the final length before combining files with Merge PDF.
How the page count is read
Every PDF keeps its pages in a page tree, and the root of that tree stores a /Count entry with the total number of pages. The counter opens each file with the pdf.js engine, which reads the cross-reference table and the page tree without rendering anything, so the cost is small even for a 1,000-page book.
If a file is damaged or locked with an open password, the tool looks for the page-tree root directly in the file’s bytes. Encryption protects text strings and streams but not the structure of the page tree, so the count is usually still available; those rows are marked with an asterisk. Files whose page tree is stored inside an encrypted object stream cannot be counted until they are unlocked.
Pages, sheets and sizes
The page count tells you how many pages a reader will scroll through, not how much paper you need. For printing, divide by two for duplex printing, and check page sizes as well — a file mixing A4 and A3 or US Letter and Tabloid pages costs differently. The PDF Dimension Checker lists the size of every page, and Split PDF can break an oversized document into parts.
PDF Page Counter FAQ
How do I count pages in multiple PDF files at once?
Select all the files in your file picker (or drag a whole selection) onto the PDF Page Counter. Each file is listed with its page count and the total appears at the top. You can keep adding files and the totals update.
Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can count?
There is no fixed limit. Files are read one small batch at a time in your browser, so hundreds of files work fine; very large collections are limited only by your device’s memory and patience.
Can it count pages in a password-protected PDF?
Often, yes. The page tree is usually not encrypted, so the count is read from it and marked with an asterisk. If the file stores its structure in encrypted object streams, unlock it first.
Why does a file show “Not a PDF file”?
The file does not start with a PDF header — it may be a different format with a .pdf extension, or a download that failed. Try saving it again from the source.
Does the page counter upload my files?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, and the files never leave your computer or phone.
Can I export the page counts to Excel?
Yes. “Download CSV” creates a file that opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice, and “Copy table” lets you paste the results straight into a spreadsheet.
