Convert MP4 to MOV for Apple apps without losing quality
This MP4 to MOV converter rewraps MP4 videos in Apple’s QuickTime MOV format, directly in your browser. Most MP4 files contain H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and MOV can hold exactly those streams, so they are copied across without being decoded: the MOV looks identical, is practically the same size and is ready in seconds. Your files never leave your computer.
Why convert at all, when the two formats are so closely related? Some workflows still ask for MOV by name — an editor or client who wants “QuickTime files”, a broadcast or agency delivery spec, an older Final Cut Pro or Motion project, or a media library sorted by extension. And if the MP4 came from a web tool and uses VP9, AV1 or Opus, as many screen recordings and downloads do, those streams are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC so that every Apple app will import the result.
How to use the MP4 to MOV Converter
- Drop one or more MP4 or M4V files onto the upload area.
- Read the plan under each file. Copy rows move across untouched; Re-encode rows say why that stream has to change.
- Keep Video codec on “Keep original” for a lossless rewrap, or choose H.264 or HEVC to force one. Set a Resolution only if you also want the clip smaller.
- Press Convert to MOV and compare the MP4 and the MOV in the preview players.
- Download each .mov file, or all of them as a ZIP.
MP4 to MOV Converter features
Lossless rewrap
H.264, HEVC and AAC are copied packet for packet into the QuickTime container — no generation loss and no new compression artefacts.
Rotation preserved
Portrait phone clips keep their rotation flag, so they open the right way up in QuickTime and Photos.
Web MP4s fixed automatically
VP9, AV1, Opus and MP3, which MOV workflows rarely accept, are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC without you having to ask.
Batch conversion
Convert a whole shoot in one go and download a single ZIP.
Side-by-side preview
Play the MP4 and the new MOV next to each other before you download.
MP4 and MOV: siblings, not strangers
MOV is the QuickTime File Format, which Apple introduced with QuickTime in 1991. When MPEG needed a file format for MPEG-4, its ISO base media file format (ISO/IEC 14496-12) was modelled on QuickTime, and MP4 (ISO/IEC 14496-14) is built on top of that. Both store media in the same kind of nested boxes, or “atoms”, which is why moving between them is usually a quick rewrap rather than a full conversion.
The differences lie in which codecs and extras each side supports. MOV is Apple’s production container: it carries ProRes, uncompressed PCM audio, timecode tracks and Apple-specific metadata. MP4 is the international delivery standard that phones, browsers, TVs and streaming services are tuned for.
What gets copied and what gets converted
MP3 inside MOV is technically possible, but Apple’s editing apps handle AAC far more reliably, so the tool converts it.
| Inside your MP4 | In the MOV |
|---|---|
| H.264 (AVC) video | Copied unchanged |
| HEVC (H.265) video | Copied unchanged |
| VP9 or AV1 video | Re-encoded to H.264 (or HEVC, if you choose it) |
| AAC audio | Copied unchanged |
| Opus or MP3 audio | Re-encoded to AAC |
| AC-3 / E-AC-3 (Dolby) audio | Kept as is, left out, or converted to AAC with ffmpeg.wasm — your choice |
| Subtitle tracks | Not copied, but listed in the plan |
Tips for editing in Final Cut Pro, iMovie and Premiere
- HEVC phone footage edits more smoothly on older Macs as H.264. Choose H.264 as the video codec; expect a bigger file and some encoding time.
- Keep the original MP4 until you have checked the MOV: a rewrap is lossless, a re-encode is not.
- To send a lighter file afterwards, shrink it with the MOV compressor, or cut it down first with Trim Video.
- If an editor shows the clip sideways, it is ignoring the rotation flag; Rotate Video can turn the picture itself.
MP4 to MOV Converter FAQ
How do I convert MP4 to MOV?
Drop the MP4 files above and press Convert to MOV. If the video is H.264 or HEVC with AAC audio, the streams are copied into a .mov file within seconds; otherwise they are re-encoded first. Download the files singly or as a ZIP.
Is MP4 to MOV lossless?
For H.264, HEVC and AAC — the codecs in nearly every phone and camera MP4 — yes: the compressed data is copied bit for bit. Only VP9, AV1, Opus and similar streams are re-encoded, and the plan tells you before you start.
Will the MOV be bigger than the MP4?
A rewrapped MOV is within a few kilobytes of the original, because only the headers change. A re-encoded one can be larger or smaller depending on the quality setting.
Does MOV have better quality than MP4?
No. The container doesn’t affect quality — the codec and bitrate do. A rewrap simply moves the same data into a different box.
Can Windows play MOV files?
Windows 10 and 11 play most H.264 MOV files in their built-in apps, and VLC plays nearly all of them. For the widest compatibility MP4 is the safer choice; MOV to MP4 converts back just as quickly.
Are my videos uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion uses your browser’s media engine and the Mediabunny library (MPL-2.0), so the files stay on your device.
