Convert MOBI and AZW3 to EPUB without uploading your book
The MOBI to EPUB converter opens Kindle-format ebooks — classic MOBI (Mobipocket, KF7), AZW, and the newer AZW3 (KF8) — and rebuilds them as standard EPUB 3 files with their chapters, pictures, cover, table of contents and metadata.
EPUB is the open format read by Kobo, PocketBook, Tolino, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Thorium and most library apps. Converting old MOBI files lets you move a personal collection to a new reader, edit it in Sigil, or read it on a phone app that has never understood Kindle formats.
The file is decoded entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, so personal documents and review copies stay private.
How to convert MOBI to EPUB
- Drop a
.mobi,.azw,.azw3or.prcfile on the upload area, or click to choose it. - The book is read straight away. Check the chapter list and the counts of words, images and contents entries.
- Correct the Title, Author(s), Language code or Publisher if needed. For combined files you can choose which edition inside the file to use.
- Press Download EPUB. The new file is checked for structural errors before it is saved.
MOBI to EPUB Converter features
MOBI 6, AZW and AZW3
Classic Mobipocket files are decompressed (PalmDOC or HUFF/CDIC) and split at their page breaks; AZW3 and the KF8 half of combined files are read with the MIT-licensed @lingo-reader/mobi-parser.
Contents that work
The table of contents comes from the book’s NCX index or its contents page, keeps its nesting, and every entry and internal link points at the right place in the new chapter files.
Old formatting translated
Mobipocket-only markup such as <font size>, width indents and height spacing becomes ordinary CSS, so paragraphs keep their indents and headings their size.
Pictures and cover
Image records become EPUB images, unusual formats such as BMP are converted to PNG, and the Kindle cover becomes a full-screen EPUB cover page.
Editable metadata
Title, authors, language and publisher from the EXTH header are filled in for you and can be changed before saving.
Valid EPUB 3
Every book is written with a navigation document, an EPUB 2 NCX for older readers and strict XHTML. Converted test books passed W3C EPUBCheck with no errors.
Kindle formats explained
| Format | What it is | Converts here? |
|---|---|---|
| MOBI / PRC (KF7) | Mobipocket format used by early Kindles, HTML with Kindle-specific tags | Yes, if not DRM-protected |
| AZW | Amazon’s name for MOBI files bought from the Kindle store, usually with DRM | Only DRM-free copies |
| AZW3 / KF8 | Kindle Format 8 (2011): HTML5 and CSS split into fragments | Yes, if not DRM-protected |
| Combined .mobi | A KF7 and a KF8 copy in one file (made by KindleGen and other tools) | Yes — choose the edition |
| KFX / AZW (2015+) | Amazon’s newest format, tied to Kindle devices | No |
Why some Kindle books cannot be converted
Books bought from the Kindle store are almost always protected with DRM: their text records are encrypted with a key tied to your Amazon account. The converter checks the encryption field in the file header and tells you when a book is protected instead of producing garbage. Galaxy of Tools does not remove DRM.
DRM-free MOBI and AZW3 files are common, though: Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, many independent authors and older personal documents all use them, and they convert completely.
After converting
- To read the EPUB on a Kindle again, Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB files directly. For an older Kindle, EPUB to MOBI makes a fresh MOBI.
- Need a printable copy? Turn the result into a PDF with EPUB to PDF.
- For plain text in reading order, use EPUB to TXT.
MOBI to EPUB Converter FAQ
How do I convert MOBI to EPUB?
Drop the MOBI file onto this page, check the title and author, and press “Download EPUB”. The MOBI to EPUB conversion runs in your browser and works for MOBI, AZW and AZW3 files that are not DRM-protected.
Can I convert AZW3 to EPUB?
Yes. AZW3 (KF8) files are read with an open-source parser and rebuilt as EPUB 3 with their stylesheets, fonts, images and table of contents.
Why does it say my book has DRM?
Most books bought from the Kindle store are encrypted so that only your registered Kindle devices and apps can read them. The converter detects this from the file header. It does not break DRM, so these books cannot be converted.
Will the formatting be kept?
Headings, italics, bold, indents, alignment, images and internal links are kept. MOBI 6 files have very limited formatting to begin with; AZW3 files keep their own CSS.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit — the work happens on your device. Very large illustrated books (hundreds of megabytes) need a desktop browser with enough memory.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The book is read and the EPUB is written in your browser tab; nothing is sent to a server.
