Convert HEIF photos from phones and cameras to JPG
HEIF — the High Efficiency Image File Format — is the container standard behind iPhone HEIC photos, but Apple isn’t the only company using it. Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones offer a “high efficiency” photo option, and mirrorless cameras from Canon, Sony and Fujifilm can record 10-bit HEIF files with a .HIF extension. This HEIF to JPG converter turns all of them into ordinary JPGs that open on any computer, website or printer.
Add one file or a whole memory-card folder, set the JPG quality and download the results individually or as a ZIP. Files are decoded in your browser with the open-source libheif library, so nothing is uploaded — useful when the photos are personal or still unpublished work.
How to convert HEIF to JPG
- Drop .heif, .heic or .hif files on the upload area, or click to choose them from your phone, computer or card reader.
- Set the JPG quality — 90% is a safe default for photos you might print.
- Leave the Background colour on white unless your files contain transparent areas (camera photos don’t).
- Keep Main image only, or choose All images in the file to extract every image a HEIF collection holds.
- Download each JPG, or press Download all as ZIP to save them together.
HEIF to JPG Converter features
Every HEIF flavour
Reads .heif, .heic and camera .hif files that contain HEVC-coded images. AVIF files, which use the same container, open through the browser’s own decoder.
Adjustable JPG quality
Pick 40–100%. Each card shows the resulting size, so you can balance quality against file size.
Multi-image files
HEIF can hold several images in one file. Extract just the main one or all of them, numbered in order.
Renamed-file detection
If a “.heif” is really a JPG or PNG, it is recognised from its contents and still converted.
Runs locally
Your photos are decoded on your own device and never sent to a server.
HEIF, HEIC and HIF: what the names mean
HEIF is a container format, standardised by MPEG as ISO/IEC 23008-12. It describes how images, thumbnails, metadata and extras such as depth maps are packed into one file. The images inside can be compressed with different codecs, and the file extension usually hints at which one:
| Extension | What’s inside | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| .heic | HEVC (H.265) images | iPhone and iPad, many Android phones |
| .heif | HEVC images, occasionally other codecs | Android phones, image editors |
| .hif | HEVC images, often 10-bit | Canon, Sony and Fujifilm cameras |
| .avif | AV1 images | Web images, some newer phones and apps |
All the HEVC-based variants decode the same way here. For photos straight from an iPhone, the HEIC to JPG converter covers the Apple-specific details.
Camera HEIF files and 10-bit HDR
Cameras such as the Canon EOS R5 and Sony a7 IV can save 10-bit HEIF instead of 8-bit JPEG, keeping smoother gradients and, in HDR modes, a wider brightness range. A JPG holds 8 bits per channel, so the conversion maps each image to a standard 8-bit picture. Most photos look just as expected; very bright HDR highlights can appear flatter than on an HDR display.
Some camera HEIF files use profiles the browser decoder can’t read. If a file fails, export a JPG with the manufacturer’s free software — Canon Digital Photo Professional or Sony Imaging Edge Desktop, for example — or switch the camera to JPG or RAW+JPG for shoots where you need JPGs straight away.
Getting JPGs straight from your phone
- Samsung Galaxy: in the Camera app, open Settings and turn off the high-efficiency pictures option to go back to JPG. Photos already taken stay in HEIF.
- Other Android phones: look for a “HEIF”, “HEIC” or “high efficiency” switch in the camera’s format or storage settings.
- Sharing: many gallery and messaging apps convert to JPG automatically when you send a photo, but email attachments and cloud-drive downloads usually keep the original HEIF.
- After converting, use the Image Compressor for smaller files, or JPG to PDF to put several photos into one document.
HEIF to JPG Converter FAQ
How do I convert HEIF to JPG for free?
Drop the .heif files onto this page, choose a JPG quality and press “Download all as ZIP”. It’s free, needs no account and runs in your browser.
What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC?
HEIF is the container format; HEIC is a HEIF file whose images are compressed with HEVC (H.265). In everyday use both names refer to the same kind of photo, and this converter reads both.
Can I convert .HIF files from my Canon or Sony camera?
Usually, yes — .hif files are HEIF files with HEVC-coded images. A few 10-bit HDR variants may not decode in a browser; for those, export JPGs with the camera maker’s software.
Does converting HEIF to JPG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is lossy too, but at 85–95% quality the difference isn’t visible in normal viewing. Use a higher setting for photos you plan to print or edit.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The HEIF decoder is downloaded to your browser once, and every photo is converted locally on your device.
What happens to HEIF files that contain several images?
By default only the main image is converted, and the card tells you how many more the file holds. Choose “All images in the file” and press “Convert again with new settings” to get every image.
