Convert AVIF to JPG so any app can open it
AVIF files are tiny and look great in a modern browser, but drop one into an older photo editor, an office document, a print service or an upload form and it may simply be rejected. This AVIF to JPG converter turns AVIF images into standard JPG files in your browser — no installs, no uploads and batches of any size.
The converter uses your browser’s built-in AVIF decoder when there is one, and switches to a WebAssembly decoder (@jsquash/avif, Apache-2.0) when there isn’t, so it works even in browsers that can’t display AVIF themselves.
How to use the AVIF to JPG Converter
- Drop AVIF files onto the upload area, click to choose them, or paste with Ctrl+V.
- Set the JPG Quality — 90 keeps the detail the AVIF contains.
- Choose a Background for transparent areas if your AVIFs have transparency.
- Check each result: the list shows the size change and notes when the WebAssembly decoder or first-frame extraction was used.
- Download the JPGs individually, or all at once in a ZIP.
AVIF to JPG Converter features
Two decoders
Native decoding where the browser supports AVIF; otherwise the @jsquash/avif WebAssembly decoder loads automatically.
Transparency flattened your way
AVIF can carry an alpha channel and JPG can’t, so transparent pixels are placed on the colour you choose.
HDR and 10-bit handled
High-bit-depth and HDR AVIFs are converted to standard 8-bit sRGB JPGs that look consistent on ordinary screens.
Image sequences
Animated AVIF files become a JPG of the first frame, and are flagged in the list.
Real format detection
Files are identified by their AVIF signature, and iPhone HEIC photos, which use a similar container, are pointed to the right tool.
Why AVIF files still cause compatibility problems
AVIF arrived in 2019 and browsers adopted it over several years: Chrome 85 in 2020, Firefox 93 in 2021, Safari 16 in 2022 and Microsoft Edge only with version 121, in January 2024. Outside the browser, support is patchier still — on many Windows PCs the Photos app needs Microsoft’s AV1 Video Extension to display AVIF, and plenty of office suites, print kiosks, marketplaces and government portals accept only JPG or PNG.
JPG, standardised in 1992, is the one format that every camera, phone, computer and website understands. Converting an AVIF to JPG trades some compression efficiency for that universal compatibility.
What to expect from the JPG
- A bigger file. AVIF compresses much better than JPG, so a JPG of the same visual quality needs more bytes. That is normal; lower the quality only if size matters more than detail.
- No transparency. Transparent AVIFs are flattened onto your background colour. Need to keep it? Use AVIF to PNG.
- Standard dynamic range. HDR, 10-bit and 12-bit AVIFs are drawn in 8-bit sRGB, so very bright highlights may look flatter or clip.
- One frame. Animated AVIF sequences become a still of the first frame.
- Need a PDF? Combine the converted JPGs with JPG to PDF.

AVIF to JPG Converter FAQ
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Drop your AVIF files on the converter above, set the JPG quality and a background colour for transparency, then download the JPGs one by one or as a ZIP.
Why can’t I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF is newer than most desktop software. On Windows the Photos app may need the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, and many older editors don’t read AVIF at all. Converting to JPG avoids the problem.
Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?
A little, since JPG is lossy too. At quality 90 the JPG looks the same as the AVIF on screen. For a lossless copy, convert to PNG instead.
My browser can’t display AVIF — will this still work?
Yes. If the browser has no AVIF decoder of its own, the page loads a WebAssembly decoder automatically and converts the file anyway.
What happens to transparent AVIF images?
JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick — white by default.
Are my AVIF files uploaded?
No. Decoding and JPG encoding both run in your browser. Only the decoder’s code is downloaded from a CDN, and only when it is needed.
