Boundaries: Natural Earth 5.1.1 (public domain), simplified for the screen. The world and India maps use Natural Earth’s India point-of-view boundaries, so India appears as depicted by the Government of India — the whole of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas under Pakistani and Chinese occupation, and Arunachal Pradesh. Maps at this scale are generalised: they are for counting and sharing trips, not for legal or survey use.

A countries visited map maker with a counter, US states and Indian states

This countries visited map maker turns your travel history into a coloured map and a number you can share. Tap countries on the map or tick them in the list, and it counts how many of the world’s 195 countries you have been to, what share of the world’s land that covers, and how many continents you have set foot on. Switch to US states or India’s states and union territories to make a states visited map the same way.

Everything is drawn offline from public-domain Natural Earth boundaries, so the map works without sign-up and your list never leaves your browser. Mark places you want to visit in a second colour, pick your own colours, add a title and download the finished map as a PNG for social media or an SVG for printing.

How to use the Countries Visited Map Maker

  1. Choose the map: World countries, US states or India states & UTs.
  2. Leave “Tapping the map marks” on Visited and tap each place you have been to. Small countries such as Singapore or Malta are drawn as dots; on the world map, use Zoom to to get closer to Europe or the Caribbean.
  3. Prefer a list? Search for a name under Tick from the list and tick it. Tap the star next to a name to add it to your wish list.
  4. Read your count, the share of land area and the breakdown by continent or group in the table under the map.
  5. Change the colours and the title, then press Download PNG or Download SVG. Copy list gives you a text version for messages or notes.

What counts as a country here

The counter uses the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two UN observer states, the Holy See (Vatican City) and Palestine — 195 in all, the figure most travel lists use. Places that are not counted as countries, such as Greenland, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, the Faroe Islands or Antarctica, can still be ticked; they are counted separately as territories and other places, and they do count towards your land area and continents.

Continents follow Natural Earth’s assignment of each country, which puts Russia in Europe and Turkey in Asia. The land-area share uses each unit’s area, including inland water, from the same data.

How the maps are made

  • Source: Natural Earth 5.1.1 cultural vectors at 1:10 million, a public-domain dataset maintained by cartographers.
  • World map: Natural Earth’s India point-of-view edition of the country boundaries, drawn in the Equal Earth projection so that areas are shown fairly.
  • India map: Natural Earth state boundaries inside India’s boundary as depicted by the Government of India. The parts of Jammu and Kashmir occupied by Pakistan and China are shown in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, following the maps released by the Survey General of India on 2 November 2019 (Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Chilhas and the Tribal Territory of 1947 are part of Leh district).
  • US map: state boundaries in an Albers equal-area projection with Alaska and Hawaii moved into insets, as on most US maps.
  • Shapes are simplified for fast drawing, and large lakes such as the Great Lakes are cut out. Tiny islands are shown as dots so they can still be tapped.

Tips for a better travel map

  • Decide your own rule for “visited” before you start — many travellers count a country only if they left the airport, others count any border crossing.
  • Use the wish list colour to plan: the map then shows where you have been and where you are going next.
  • For a single trip with stops and a route, use the Pin Map Maker; for distances between places, the Great Circle Route Map.
  • Look up currencies, plugs and dialling codes for your next country in the Country Information Lookup.

Countries Visited Map Maker FAQ

How do I make a countries visited map?

Pick World countries, tap each country you have been to (or tick it in the list), then press Download PNG. The count, share of the world and continents update as you go.

How many countries are there in the world?

This counter uses 195: the 193 UN member states plus the two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Territories such as Greenland, Hong Kong or Puerto Rico are listed separately so they do not inflate the country count.

Can I make a states visited map for India or the US?

Yes. Choose India states & UTs for the 28 states and 8 union territories, or US states for the 50 states plus Washington, D.C. Each map keeps its own marks.

Is the India map correct?

India is drawn with the boundary depicted by the Government of India, including the whole of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, on both the world and India maps. The boundaries are simplified for the screen, so they are not for legal or survey use.

Are my visited countries saved?

Yes, in this browser only. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data, or using a different device, starts a fresh map — download the SVG or copy the list to keep a record.

Why is my country only a dot?

Countries smaller than a few pixels at world scale, such as Singapore, Malta or the Pacific islands, are shown as dots so you can still tap them. Zoom to a region for a closer view.
